How to Get to Cayo Arena

Getting to Cayo Arena is part of the adventure and an experience in itself. This islet is not accessible by land, so the only way to reach it is by boat. Most excursions depart from the small and picturesque fishing village of Punta Rucia, in the province of Puerto Plata.

From Punta Rucia

Punta Rucia is the most common and convenient starting point. From here, the trip by speedboat to Cayo Arena takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on sea conditions. We recommend booking an organized tour, as these usually include land transportation from your hotel (if you're in Puerto Plata or Santiago), the boat trip, snorkeling equipment, drinks, and sometimes a light lunch. Local tour operators in Punta Rucia also offer the service directly.

From Puerto Plata and Other Cities

If you are in the city of Puerto Plata, most hotels and tour operators offer full-day excursions to Cayo Arena. The land journey from Puerto Plata to Punta Rucia can take between 1.5 and 2 hours, passing through very interesting rural landscapes. There are also tour options from Santiago de los Caballeros, although the land journey will be a bit longer.

It's important to consider that the boats are usually small and fast, so if you are prone to seasickness, it's advisable to take precautions before departing. The trip is generally calm and offers spectacular views of the coast and mangroves.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Cayo Arena, the first thing that captivated us was the quality of its sand. It's immaculately white, incredibly fine and soft to the touch, almost like flour. Walking barefoot on it is a delight, and its purity contributes to the exceptional clarity of the surrounding water. The type of ground is purely sand, with no rocks or pebbles to hinder the enjoyment of every step.

But if the sand is impressive, the water is simply magical. We are faced with waters of an intense turquoise color that fade into deep blue tones as we move away from the islet. The transparency is astonishing; visibility is so good that we can observe the seabed and fish several meters away without needing to submerge. These waters are calm, warm, and shallow around the cay, making them perfect for swimming and relaxing.

The combination of white sand and crystal-clear waters creates a hypnotic visual effect. It's the perfect setting for those postcard photos we all dream of taking in the Caribbean. The water temperature is ideal for a prolonged swim, inviting us to spend hours floating and exploring the underwater world hidden beneath the surface.

Services and Facilities

Cayo Arena is a virgin islet, which means you won't find large permanent infrastructure. Its charm lies precisely in its natural state and the absence of massive development. However, this doesn't mean there aren't basic amenities for visitors, thanks to the tour operators who manage the excursions.

When we arrived at the cay, we found:

• Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: Tours usually bring umbrellas and sun loungers that are temporarily set up on the sand so visitors can take shelter from the sun and relax comfortably. This is crucial, as sun exposure on the cay is intense.
• Chiringuitos: There are no fixed chiringuitos, but tour guides usually set up small improvised stalls or bring coolers with refreshing drinks (water, soft drinks, beers) and sometimes some fruit or snacks for participants. It's important to ask what your tour includes to avoid surprises.
• Equipment Rental: Snorkeling equipment (masks, snorkels, and fins) is usually included in the excursion price. If you want something more specific, like underwater cameras, it's better to bring them yourself or ask the operator in advance.
