How to Get to Playa San Rafael

Getting to Playa San Rafael is part of the adventure and charm of discovering the Barahona region. Located in the province of the same name, in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, this beach is conveniently located alongside Highway 44, also known as the Ruta del Sol or the Barahona-Paraíso-Enriquillo Highway. This highway is famous for its panoramic views, winding along the coast and offering marine and mountain postcards at every turn, a true visual delight that anticipates the beauty of the final destination.

From Barahona City

If you are in the city of Barahona, the journey to Playa San Rafael is relatively short and simple. We estimate that the trip by private vehicle takes approximately 25 to 35 minutes, covering a distance of about 20 to 25 kilometers. The road is in good condition for the most part, allowing for a pleasant and safe journey. You simply need to take Highway 44 heading south, following the coast. The beach is quite visible from the highway and there are basic signs, plus the presence of vehicles and people that usually indicate its location, especially on weekends. The coastal route is, in itself, an attraction, with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the mountains on the other.

Transportation Options

• Private or rental vehicle: This is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and flexible option. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stopping at viewpoints, in picturesque towns, or at other nearby Barahona beaches, like El Quemaito or Los Patos. Most car rental agencies operate at the main airports of the Dominican Republic, such as Santo Domingo (SDQ) or Punta Cana (PUJ), from where the route to Barahona is about 3-4 hours.
• Local public transport (Guaguas): For a more authentic and economical experience, you can opt for the 'guaguas' or public minibuses. These vehicles regularly travel Highway 44 between Barahona and the southern coastal towns. You just need to tell the driver to drop you off at Playa San Rafael. It is a viable option, though less comfortable if you have a lot of luggage or if you need strict schedules, as they usually depart when full.
• Taxis or motoconchos: From Barahona, you can hire a taxi to take you directly to the beach. It is a more expensive option than the guagua, but it offers more privacy and comfort, especially if you are traveling in a group. For shorter distances or if you are in a nearby town, 'motoconchos' (motorcycle taxis) are a popular and fast option, although we always recommend negotiating the price before getting on and ensuring the driver is prudent and wears a helmet.

Make sure to carry enough water and, if you are in your own vehicle, check the fuel tank, as gas stations can be scarce in some sections of the highway after Barahona.
