How to Get to Praia do Mindelo
Getting to Praia do Mindelo is relatively straightforward, given its good connection with the main transport routes in northern Portugal. Its strategic location, a few kilometers north of the city of Porto, makes it accessible both for those traveling by car and for those who prefer public transport.
By Car
For us, the most comfortable way to get to Praia do Mindelo is undoubtedly by car. From Porto, the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the A28 motorway towards Viana do Castelo/Vila do Conde and take the exit towards Mindelo. The signs are well-marked and the trip is quite direct. Once in Mindelo, finding parking is generally easy, especially outside the peak season. There are several parking areas near the beach, although in the middle of August we might have to walk a bit further. The ease of access by private vehicle allows us to bring everything needed for a beach day and explore the surroundings with complete freedom.
By Public Transport
If we prefer not to drive, public transport is also an excellent option. Line B of the Metro do Porto takes us to Vila do Conde or Póvoa de Varzim, from where we can take a taxi or a local bus to Mindelo. The metro journey from central Porto takes about 40-50 minutes. While there is no metro stop directly at the beach, the combination of metro and a short additional trip is perfectly viable and allows us to enjoy the scenery without worrying about parking. It is an ecological and relaxing alternative to reach our beloved Praia do Mindelo beach.
The Sand and Water
One of the aspects that most captivates us about Praia do Mindelo is certainly the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. These two elements are fundamental for a pleasant beach experience, and here, on this beach in Porto, both excel.
The Sand: A Golden and Soft Carpet
The sand at Praia do Mindelo is predominantly fine and of a beautiful golden color. Walking barefoot on it, we feel an unparalleled softness under our feet, making it perfect for long walks along the shore or for the little ones to play and build sandcastles without difficulty. Its expanse is considerable, giving us ample space to lay out our towels and umbrellas without feeling crowded, even on the busiest days. It is the type of sand that doesn't stick excessively and shakes off easily, a detail we always appreciate. The cleanliness of the sand is another point to highlight, reflecting the beach's commitment to the Blue Flag and environmental sustainability.
The Water: Crystal Clear and Refreshing
The waters of Praia do Mindelo are known for their cleanliness and transparency. Thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, they remain cool, offering a welcome relief during warm summer days. Although the water temperature can be a bit cooler than on the beaches of southern Portugal, it is perfectly suitable for swimming and very refreshing. Furthermore, the water quality is guaranteed by the Blue Flag, meaning it undergoes regular checks and meets the highest quality standards. The waves here are usually moderate, making it a safe place to swim and enjoy the sea, especially for families with children. The seabed, although predominantly sandy, can have some rocky areas, which sometimes reveal small marine life at low tide, inviting us to explore.
