How to Get to Praia do Beliche

Getting to Praia do Beliche is part of the adventure. The most recommended way to reach this paradise is by car. From Faro, we take the A22 heading west towards Lagos, and then follow the signs to Sagres via the N125 and N268. The beach is located about 3 kilometers north of Sagres, on the road leading to Cabo de São Vicente. There is a small, signposted turn-off that will lead us to a parking area at the top of the cliff. It is important to consider that the parking lot can fill up quickly in high season, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.

Once we have parked, the real test is the descent. To reach the sand, we must go down a long, steep stone staircase carved into the cliff. This staircase, although well-maintained, requires some caution and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or for those with baby strollers. But believe us, the effort is worth it. Each step brings us closer to the reward: the stunning view of the cove opening before us, with its turquoise waters and the immensity of the ocean.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Praia do Beliche, the first thing we notice is the quality of its sand. It is fine, golden sand, very pleasant to the touch, perfect for spreading out our towel and enjoying the sun. Although it is predominantly sand, in some areas, especially near the rocks, we can find small shells and pebbles that add texture to the landscape. It is a relatively small beach, which contributes to that feeling of an intimate, protected cove.

The waters of Beliche are, as in much of the Portuguese Atlantic, of an intense blue and surprisingly clear. However, do not expect the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Here, the water temperature is usually cooler, even in summer, making it perfect for cooling off on hot days. It is important to know that, due to its orientation and exposure to the Atlantic, Praia do Beliche can have considerable surf. This makes it a hotspot for surfers, but it also means we must be cautious when swimming, especially if we are not used to ocean currents. The water's clarity, however, is ideal for snorkeling on calmer days, allowing us to observe the marine life hiding among the rocks.

Services and Facilities

Although Praia do Beliche maintains a wild and natural feel, it has some essential services that make our visit more comfortable. At the top of the cliff, near the parking lot, or sometimes, a small establishment at the base of the stairs, we will find a chiringuito or a bar. This is the perfect place to have a coffee, a soft drink, or even enjoy a light meal with spectacular ocean views. It is a much-appreciated oasis after the descent.

During the bathing season, which generally runs from June to September, the beach has lifeguards. Their presence gives us greater peace of mind, especially due to the surf that can occur. It is crucial to always follow their instructions and respect the safety flags. Also, near the chiringuito or at the top, there are usually Bathrooms/WC available, which is a highly valued service on a beach of this nature. Do not expect showers or rentals of umbrellas and sun loungers directly on the sand, as Beliche's philosophy is more that of a natural, less developed beach. We advise bringing your own umbrella and everything you need for the day.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Praia do Beliche will largely depend on our priorities. We, personally, find that spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) are the ideal times. During these months, the weather is generally mild and sunny, temperatures are pleasant for sunbathing, and the number of visitors is significantly lower than in the peak of summer. This allows us to enjoy the beach with greater tranquility, explore the caves and surroundings without crowds, and find a parking spot easily.
