Although our reference name places it in Portimão, it's important to emphasize that the famous Praia do Amado is actually in the municipality of Aljezur, within the district of Faro, a true treasure of the western Algarve.

Here, the Atlantic shows its full splendor, with waves breaking powerfully against the coast, sculpting impressive cliffs and creating a dramatic landscape that takes your breath away. This is not a beach for those seeking calm waters and crowded resorts, but for those who yearn for a connection with nature, the thrill of sport, and the beauty of an almost pristine environment. How to Get to Praia do Amado

Getting to Praia do Amado is an adventure in itself, part of the charm of visiting such a special place. The most comfortable way to reach this gem of the Vicentina Coast is undoubtedly by car. From Faro, the district capital, the journey takes about an hour and a half, while from Portimão, one of the main cities in the Algarve, the trip is about 50-60 minutes, making it a perfect day trip from these larger urban areas.

Directions and Parking

To get there, we need to take the N125 or the A22 (if coming from farther away) and then turn off onto the N120 towards Aljezur. Once near Aljezur or Carrapateira, we'll find clear signage to the beach. The road down to the sand is paved, although in some sections it can be a bit narrow and winding, offering spectacular views as we approach. Upon arrival, we'll find a large, though unpaved, parking area that tends to fill up on busy days, especially during summer and on weekends. Our recommendation is to arrive early to secure a good spot and enjoy the morning tranquility of the beach.

The Sand and the Water

Praia do Amado welcomes us with a considerable expanse of fine, golden sand, which contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the Atlantic and the reddish ochre of the surrounding cliffs. It's a soft, pleasant sand underfoot, perfect for long walks or simply relaxing in the sun, whenever the wind allows. The beach is approximately 800 meters long, giving us plenty of space to find our own spot, even on crowded days.

The Atlantic Waters

The waters of Praia do Amado are, as expected on Portugal's Atlantic coast, cool and invigorating. The water temperature varies with the season, being colder in winter and warming slightly in summer, although it never reaches the warm temperatures of the Mediterranean. However, its main attraction is the waves. Praia do Amado is famous for its ideal conditions for surfing and bodyboarding, with consistent breaks that attract surfers of all levels. This means the sea can be quite rough with strong currents, so we always recommend taking extreme caution and following the instructions of the lifeguards.

Despite its wild and natural character, Praia do Amado offers a range of essential services that make our visit more comfortable and safe. Don't expect the infrastructure of a luxury resort, but rather what's necessary to fully enjoy the Atlantic experience.

Beach Amenities

• Lifeguards: During the high season, the beach has a lifeguard post and surveillance, which is crucial given the wave conditions. It's always prudent to swim in the supervised areas.
• Chiringuitos: On the beach or nearby, you'll usually find one or two chiringuitos or small cafes where we can enjoy refreshing drinks, snacks, and sometimes light meals. They're perfect for recharging after a surf session or a walk.
• Equipment Rental: Given its reputation as a surf destination, it's no surprise that we find several surf schools and equipment rental points. Here we can rent boards, wetsuits, and, if we're beginners, take lessons with experienced instructors. It's an excellent opportunity to get started in this exciting sport.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: There are basic outdoor showers to wash off the sand and salt after swimming, as well as public toilets/WC, although they are usually simple.
• Parking: As mentioned, there is a parking area close to the beach, making access easier for visitors.

Praia do Amado is a destination we can enjoy year-round, but the 'best time' depends greatly on our intentions. Each season offers a different facet of this captivating beach.

For Surfers

For surf lovers, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are usually the ideal months. During these seasons, the waves are consistent and powerful, and the crowds are smaller than in the peak of summer. The weather is pleasant, with sunny days but without the stifling summer heat. Winter can also offer spectacular waves, but the weather conditions are more unpredictable and the water is colder.
