Welcome to Praia de Armação de Pêra, a shining jewel in the heart of the Portuguese Algarve. When we think of Faro beaches and, in general, Portugal beaches, this coastal town in Faro stands out as a privileged destination that perfectly combines the tradition of an old fishing village with the modernity of a well-equipped tourist resort. We are faced with an extensive beach, bathed by the Atlantic, whose serene waters and golden sand invite relaxation and enjoyment.
Armação de Pêra is not just a beach; it's an experience. From the moment we arrive, we are enveloped in a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. Its wide promenade, dotted with palm trees, is a perfect place for an evening stroll, while the gentle murmur of the waves accompanies our steps. Here, life moves at a leisurely pace, but there is always something to do, from savoring artisanal ice cream to dining at one of its many restaurants with sea views. It is, without a doubt, one of those Portugal beaches that stays etched in memory for its charm and its ability to offer something to every visitor, regardless of age or preferences.
Our visit to Praia de Armação de Pêra has allowed us to discover a place where natural beauty merges with excellent infrastructure. The rock formations flanking the beach to the west, sculpted by wind and sea, add a dramatic touch to the landscape, creating small coves and caves that invite exploration. Meanwhile, the central part of the beach opens into a vast expanse of sand, perfect for those seeking space to relax, play, or simply contemplate the immensity of the ocean. It is a destination we highly recommend for anyone seeking an authentic beach experience in the Algarve.
How to Get to Praia de Armação de Pêra
Getting to Praia de Armação de Pêra is relatively straightforward, given its strategic location in the centre of the Algarve. We have explored several options and all are convenient, depending on our starting point and travel preferences.
By Car
If we are coming from other parts of Portugal or Spain, the car is undoubtedly the most flexible option. The A22 motorway (Via do Infante) crosses the Algarve from east to west and offers well-signposted exits to Armação de Pêra. From Faro, the journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, while from Lisbon, it will take around two and a half to three hours via the A2 and then the A22. The N125, the old national road, is also an alternative, although slower due to passing through towns and cities. Once in Armação de Pêra, finding parking can be a challenge in high season, but there are public parking areas, often paid, and street parking in the areas adjacent to the promenade.
By Public Transport
For those who prefer not to drive, public transport is a viable option. From Faro, the district capital and where the airport is located, there are regular bus connections. Companies like Vamus Algarve operate routes connecting the main coastal cities and towns. The bus journey from Faro or Albufeira to Armação de Pêra is comfortable and offers the chance to enjoy the scenery. If we arrive by train, the nearest station is Alcantarilha-Pêra, but from there we will need a taxi or a local bus to reach the beach, as the station is located a few kilometres inland.
From the Airport
Faro Airport (FAO) is the main entry point for international visitors. From there, we can opt for a taxi, a private transfer service, or rent a car directly at the airport. The journey by car or taxi to Praia de Armação de Pêra usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on traffic. There are also bus services connecting the airport with Faro's bus station, from where another connection to Armação de Pêra can be taken. For comfort and speed, we usually recommend renting a car if we plan to explore the region, or a private transfer if we are only staying in the beach area.
The Sand and the Water
Praia de Armação de Pêra is a true paradise for sun and sea lovers, and much of its charm lies in the characteristics of its sand and waters. We have spent hours enjoying them and can attest to their quality.
The Sand
The sand here is predominantly fine and a beautiful golden colour. It's a delight to walk barefoot on it, feeling its softness underfoot. The beach's expanse is considerable, which means that, even on the busiest summer days, there is usually enough space to find a quiet corner to spread our towel. It's the perfect type of sand for building castles, playing paddle ball, or simply lying down and letting the sun caress our skin. Furthermore, the cleanliness of the sand is notable, another sign of the care dedicated to this beach, which holds the Blue Flag.
The Water
The waters of Praia de Armação de Pêra are one of its greatest virtues. They are, in general, calm and crystal clear, with a gentle swell that makes them ideal for swimming, especially for children and people who are not comfortable with strong currents. The water temperature, although it's the Atlantic, becomes very pleasant during the summer months, allowing us to enjoy long swims. We loved the clarity of the water, which on sunny days allows us to see the sandy bottom several metres deep. It's a real pleasure to immerse ourselves in these refreshing waters after a while under the Algarve sun. The combination of fine sand and calm waters...
