How to Get to Praia da Maré das Porcas

For us, the journey begins in the city of Faro.

From Faro by Car

If we come by car, the route is quite simple and picturesque. From the center of Faro, we must head towards Ilha de Faro, connected to the mainland by a single access bridge. We need to follow the signs to 'Praia de Faro' or 'Faro Airport', and then turn off towards the beach. Once on Ilha de Faro, crossing the bridge, the main road takes us along the island. Praia da Maré das Porcas is located on the ria side, which is the side opposite the Atlantic Ocean. We can park in the parking areas found along Ilha de Faro, especially near the restaurants and chiringuitos, and then walk a bit towards the quieter corners of the ria. It's important to remember that in high season, parking can be limited and paid, so we recommend arriving early.

Public Transport from Faro

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a regular bus service from the center of Faro (Faro bus station) to Praia de Faro. Buses are frequent during the day, especially in summer. Once the bus drops us off at Praia de Faro, we'll have to walk a few minutes along the island to reach the quieter area of the ria where Praia da Maré das Porcas is located. The walk is pleasant and allows us to appreciate the fishermen's houses and the relaxed atmosphere of the island. It's an excellent option for those who want a worry-free experience and enjoy the scenery without the need to find parking.

By Bicycle or on Foot

For the more adventurous and exercise-loving, getting to Ilha de Faro by bicycle is a fantastic option. There are bike lanes that connect us from Faro city to the island, offering a flat route with spectacular views of the Ria Formosa. Once on the island, we can cycle to the Praia da Maré das Porcas area. Walking from the access bridge is also possible, although it's a longer journey, ideal for those seeking a true hike and who enjoy bird watching and the ria landscape.

The waters of Praia da Maré das Porcas are, without a doubt, its most distinctive feature. Being protected from the Atlantic by Ilha de Faro itself, we don't find big waves or oceanic currents here. Instead, the water is exceptionally calm, almost like a natural pool. Its clarity varies with the tide and the sedimentation of the ria, but it's generally clear and shallow, making it ideal for a relaxing swim, especially for young children or those who don't feel comfortable with the open waters of the ocean. The water temperature tends to be slightly warmer than that of the Atlantic, especially in the summer months, inviting us to immerse ourselves and enjoy a prolonged swim. It's a place where the water embraces us gently and allows us to float in a state of absolute peace, observing the sky and the reflection of the clouds.
