Our first visit to Praia da Ilha de Tavira left an indelible impression. The feeling of arriving on an island, leaving the mainland behind and immersing ourselves in an almost pristine environment is something few places can offer. How to Get to Praia da Ilha de Tavira

Getting to Praia da Ilha de Tavira is, in itself, a small adventure that adds charm to the experience. Being a barrier island, the main access is by ferry or water taxi. We always recommend planning ahead, especially during high season.

From Tavira City (Cais das Quatro Águas)

The most popular option is to take the ferry from Cais das Quatro Águas in Tavira. This pier is located a few kilometers from the city center. We usually leave the car in the spacious parking lot available at the pier (often paid in summer) and board. The ferry ride is short, just 15-20 minutes, and offers beautiful views of the estuary and the city of Tavira in the distance. Schedules are frequent during the summer months, but it's advisable to check them in advance, as they vary by season.

From Santa Luzia

Another alternative, especially if we're coming from the 'octopus capital', Santa Luzia, is to take a smaller boat, often a water taxi, which will also take us to the island. This option can be a bit faster and more personal, ideal if we prefer to avoid the crowds of the main ferry or if we simply want a different experience. Prices are usually a bit higher, but the comfort and flexibility can make up for it.

Once on the island, disembarkation leaves us directly in the busiest area of Praia da Ilha de Tavira, where the main services are concentrated. From there, we can choose to stay nearby or walk a few minutes to find quieter, more secluded areas.

The Sand and Water

Praia da Ilha de Tavira captivates us immediately with its sand. It has a fine texture, with a soft golden color that shines under the Algarve sun. It's perfect for walking barefoot for kilometers, building sandcastles with the children, or simply lying down and feeling its warmth. The expanse of the beach is impressive; in fact, the island is about 11 kilometers long, offering plenty of space for everyone, even on the busiest days. We've never felt overwhelmed by the crowd here, something we greatly appreciate in such a popular Faro beach.

As for the water, it's typically Atlantic, meaning it's clear and refreshing. The currents here are generally gentle, thanks to the protection of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making it a very safe beach for swimming, especially for the little ones. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, and the clarity allows us to easily see the sandy bottom. It's a real pleasure to dive into these waters and enjoy a relaxing swim.
