From the moment we set foot on the viewpoint overlooking Praia da Cordoama, we know we are about to witness something truly special. This hidden gem, located on the stunning western coast of the Algarve, in the district of Faro, Portugal, is one of those Portugal beaches that stays etched in memory. It is not the typical Faro beach with calm waters and crowded umbrellas; Cordoama is a wild canvas where nature expresses itself at full power, with imposing cliffs guarding an extensive stretch of golden sand and a vibrant Atlantic that invites adventure.

We, as beach tourism experts, have explored countless coastlines, but Praia da Cordoama possesses a unique energy. It is a favorite destination for surf and bodyboard lovers, thanks to its consistent waves and relaxed atmosphere. But beyond water sports, it is a place to reconnect with nature, enjoy endless walks along the shore, and marvel at sunsets that paint the sky with impossible colors. It is a corner where time seems to stand still, allowing us to absorb the majesty of the landscape and the power of the ocean.

How to Get to Praia da Cordoama

Although administratively it falls within the district of Faro, Praia da Cordoama is geographically much closer to Vila do Bispo and Sagres, in the southwestern tip of Portugal. To reach this particular Faro beach, the most practical way is by car.

By Car

From Lagos, we take the N125 heading west towards Vila do Bispo. Once in Vila do Bispo, we follow the signs to 'Cordoama' or 'Praia da Cordoama'. The road will take us through a rural landscape, often with the sea breeze already palpable. There is a well-signposted turnoff that will guide us directly to the cliff, where we will find a large, free parking lot. It is important to remember that the last few kilometers can be on somewhat winding roads, but the general condition of the road is good. From the parking lot, access to the beach is via a wooden walkway that descends the cliff, offering spectacular panoramic views along the way.

Public Transport

Public transport to Praia da Cordoama is quite limited. There are no direct bus lines that reach the beach. If we do not have a car, the best option would be to take a bus to Vila do Bispo or Sagres and, from there, consider a taxi or private transport service for the final stretch. However, to fully enjoy the flexibility and freedom the area offers, we highly recommend using your own or a rental car.

The Sand and Water

Praia da Cordoama welcomes us with an extensive carpet of fine, golden sand, ideal for long walks and feeling the soft texture under our feet. This characteristic makes it a very pleasant place to relax and enjoy the sun, despite its more 'wild' nature. The ground type is predominantly sand, which facilitates movement and staying on the shore.

The Atlantic waters at Cordoama are crystal clear and, as is usual on the western Algarve coast, can be quite cold, even in summer. This does not deter the bravest bathers or, of course, the surfers, who find these temperatures a stimulus for activity. It is crucial to consider that currents at this Praia da Cordoama can be strong, especially when the sea is rough. Therefore, we always recommend paying attention to the warning flags and lifeguards' instructions. For less experienced swimmers or those traveling with young children, caution is essential.

Services and Facilities

Despite its natural and less developed atmosphere compared to other Portugal beaches, Praia da Cordoama has the essential services to make our visit comfortable and pleasant:

• Parking: As already mentioned, there is a large free parking area at the top of the cliff, facilitating access for visitors arriving by car.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: On the beach itself, or very close by, we will find at least one chiringuito/restaurant where we can enjoy light meals, snacks, cold drinks, and often fresh fish dishes. It is the perfect place to recharge after a surf session or a walk along the shore.
• Lifeguards: During the peak summer season (generally from June to September), the beach has a lifeguard service that watches over the safety of bathers. It is always important to respect their instructions.
• Bathrooms/WC: Toilet facilities are usually available in the chiringuito area or nearby facilities, ensuring visitor comfort.
• Equipment Rental: Given its popularity among surfers, it is common to find surf schools or rental stands for boards and wetsuits at Praia da Cordoama or in its vicinity. This is ideal for those who want to start surfing or simply do not want to travel with their own equipment.
