How to Get to Praia de Melides

Getting to Praia de Melides is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a simple journey that prepares us for the serenity that awaits. The most comfortable and recommended way to access this jewel of the Setúbal beaches is, without a doubt, by car. From Lisbon, the journey will take us approximately an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. We must take the A2 motorway heading south and then turn off onto the A26 or the N120, following the signs to Grândola and, subsequently, Melides. The roads are in good condition and the landscape along the way, with its vast fields of cork oaks and pines, already immerses us in the Alentejo atmosphere.

From the city of Setúbal, the trip is even shorter, around an hour, following the A2 and then the N120. Once we reach the village of Melides, the beach is well signposted and is a few kilometers away. There is a large parking area next to the beach, which is a great advantage, especially in the summer months. Although it can fill up in high season, its size is usually sufficient to accommodate visitors without too much trouble. It is important to remember that, as it is an area with a delicate natural environment, we must always park in designated areas to avoid damaging the local vegetation.

For those who prefer public transport, the options are more limited. There are buses connecting Setúbal and Grândola with the village of Melides, but from the village to the beach, the distance of about 3-4 kilometers may require a local taxi or a walk, which is not always ideal if we are loaded with umbrellas and coolers. Therefore, we insist that a private or rental car is, by far, the best option to fully enjoy the flexibility and comfort offered by this magnificent beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and attractive features of Praia de Melides is, without a doubt, its fine golden sand. When stepping on it, we notice that softness that only the most pristine beaches can offer, a texture that invites us to walk barefoot for hours, to build sandcastles, or simply to lie back and feel the warmth under the sun. The expanse of the sandy beach is impressive; we are talking about kilometers of virgin coastline stretching as far as the eye can see, which guarantees that, even on the busiest days, we will always find a quiet corner to set up our beach camp. There are no crowds, no feeling of overcrowding, just space, fresh air, and the vastness of the landscape.

The waters of Melides are typical of the Portuguese Atlantic: clean, clear, and, yes, somewhat refreshing. Although in summer the temperature can be very pleasant, especially in the afternoon, we should not expect the warm waters of the Mediterranean. However, this freshness is precisely what makes them so revitalizing and perfect for combating the summer heat. The water quality is excellent, certified annually with the Blue Flag, a distinction that assures us of cleanliness and adequate services. The entry into the sea is usually gentle and gradual, making it relatively safe for bathing, although, as always, we must be attentive to currents and lifeguard instructions.

The type of seabed is predominantly sandy, both on the shore and on the sea floor, which facilitates bathing and play. We will not find rocks or pebbles that make entering or exiting the water difficult, which is an advantage, especially for children and for those who enjoy swimming without worries. The combination of this soft sand and the crystal-clear waters creates an idyllic setting for relaxation, walking, and contemplation. It is a place where nature shows itself in all its splendor, offering us a perfect canvas for our vacation.
