How to Get to Praia de Machico

Getting to Praia de Machico is relatively straightforward, given its proximity to Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo (FNC) and its good connection with the rest of the island. We have tried several options, and each has its advantages, depending on what you're looking for on your trip.

By Car

If you rent a car, which is something we always recommend to explore Madeira at your own pace, the journey from Funchal to Machico takes about 20-25 minutes via the expressway (VR1). The road is in excellent condition, and the scenery along the way is simply spectacular, with tunnels cutting through mountains and impressive views of the Atlantic Ocean. Once in Machico, finding the beach is easy, as it is well signposted and has ample paid parking areas nearby, which is always a plus for convenience.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, several bus lines connect Funchal with Machico. Companies like SAM and Horários do Funchal offer regular services. The bus journey is a bit longer, around 45-60 minutes, but it's an economical option and allows you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving. The bus stops are conveniently located near the beach, making access on foot easy.

From the Airport

The proximity to the airport is another great advantage of Praia de Machico. From Madeira Airport (FNC), it takes just 5-10 minutes by car or taxi. There are even specific buses connecting the airport with Machico, making it a fantastic option for those arriving on the island and wanting to dive into its waters almost immediately, without having to travel to Funchal. It's an unbeatable welcome to the island.

Underwater visibility is good, although it's not a primary snorkeling destination; it's always possible to see some small fish near the rocks of the breakwater. For us, the combination of soft sand and serene waters makes it one of the best options for enjoying a beach day in Madeira.
