How to Get to Praia do Osso da Baleia

Accessing Praia do Osso da Baleia is relatively straightforward, although it requires a private vehicle, as public transport does not go directly to the sand. We always recommend a car for greater comfort and to explore the surroundings at our own pace.

By Car

From Leiria, the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. We must take the IC2 heading north and then turn off towards the coast, following the signs to the beach. The roads are well signposted and in good condition. If coming from the south or north via the A1, we can take the exit towards Leiria or Pombal, and from there follow the coastal signs. The road leading directly to the beach is narrow in some sections, winding through pine forests, which immerses us in a natural setting.

Parking

Praia do Osso da Baleia has a large free parking area near the main access. During the high season, especially on weekends in July and August, it can fill up, so we advise arriving early to secure a good spot. The parking is conveniently located, just a few meters from the wooden walkway that leads directly to the sand and the main beach services.

They are clean and crystal-clear waters, suitable for bathing, as attested by its Blue Flag. The entry into the sea is gradual, without significant drops, making it relatively safe, although, as with the entire Atlantic, we must be mindful of currents, especially with small children. The wave strength varies; some days they are calm and perfect for a dip, while other days we can find stronger waves, ideal for bodyboarding or simply for having fun jumping in them.

Praia do Osso da Baleia is not a virgin beach in the strictest sense, as it has excellent service infrastructure that guarantees our comfort and safety without detracting from its natural charm.

• Lifeguards: During the bathing season, the beach has a team of lifeguards who watch over our safety, a crucial point for families' peace of mind.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: We have showers to rinse off sand and salt after swimming, as well as clean and well-maintained public toilets.
• Chiringuitos (Beach Bars): Near the main access, we find one or two chiringuitos where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a light meal with sea views. They are ideal places to relax in the shade.
• Umbrella and Sunbed Rental: For those who prefer not to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting umbrellas and sunbeds, adding an extra level of comfort to our beach day.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there is a large free parking area that facilitates access to the beach.

Blue Flag and Accessibility

Praia do Osso da Baleia has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag, which certifies the quality of its waters, the cleanliness of the sand, safety, and the range of services. Regarding accessibility, the beach has wooden walkways that facilitate access from the parking lot to the sand. However, we wouldn't classify it as having 'full accessibility' in the strictest sense, as it does not have amphibious chairs or adapted infrastructure for completely autonomous access for people with very reduced mobility, although access to the sand is quite good.
