Located in Nazaré, in the Leiria district of Portugal, this beach is a unique geographical and oceanographic phenomenon, known worldwide for its giant waves, capable of reaching record heights.

For us, Praia do Norte is more than a destination; it's an experience. How to get to Praia do Norte

Getting to Praia do Norte is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite accessible, especially if we travel by car. The beach is located in Nazaré, a picturesque fishing village in the Leiria district. From Lisbon, the car journey takes about 1h30 to 2h, following the A8 motorway north. It's a peaceful drive with good scenery, taking us directly to the heart of Portugal's central coastal region. Upon arriving in Nazaré, just follow the signs to the Nazaré Lighthouse or to the Sítio da Nazaré, from where we'll have the best views of the waves.

By car

For us, the best way to get there is by car. There is parking available, although it can get crowded during big wave days or in peak tourist seasons. We recommend arriving early to secure a good spot, especially near the Lighthouse, which is the prime viewing point. There are several paid parking lots near Sítio da Nazaré, and some free spots further away. Road accessibility is excellent, with well-maintained roads that lead us without difficulty to this jewel of the beaches Leiria.

Public transport

If we prefer public transport, we can take a bus from Lisbon (Sete Rios or Oriente) to Nazaré. Rede Expressos offers several daily connections. Once in Nazaré, we can use the funicular that connects the lower town to Sítio da Nazaré, where the Lighthouse and the best viewing points for Praia do Norte are located. This is a more ecological option that allows us to enjoy the panoramic views of the village during the ascent. Although it doesn't take us directly to the sand, the funicular is an excellent starting point for our exploration.

The sand and the water

Praia do Norte is a spectacle of golden sand and turbulent waters. Its expanse is considerable, offering a vast sandy area that, outside the big wave season, can be a place for invigorating walks. The sand is predominantly fine and golden, typical of the beaches Portugal on the Atlantic coast, inviting us to take off our shoes and feel the texture underfoot. It's a pure sand ground, without significant rocks or pebbles, making it pleasant for walking.

However, it is crucial to emphasize that the waters of Praia do Norte are extremely dangerous for bathing. It is not a beach for swimming or for recreational water activities in the traditional sense. The currents are strong and unpredictable, and the waves, even on 'calm' days, can be deceptive. Its fame is precisely due to these extreme conditions, created by the Nazaré Canyon, a submarine canyon about 230 km long and 5 km deep, which channels and amplifies the energy of the Atlantic waves.

We, as visitors, must always respect the warnings of the lifeguards and the port authority. Safety is paramount. The wild beauty of Praia do Norte lies precisely in its untamed nature. It's a beach to admire, to photograph, to feel the force of the ocean, but always with due caution and at a safe distance from the breaking waves, unless we are highly experienced big wave surfers accompanied by safety teams. In short, it's a place to contemplate the majesty of the sea, not to challenge it recklessly.

Services and facilities

Considering the wild nature and extreme conditions of Praia do Norte, the services and facilities are not as comprehensive as in an urban or family beach. However, there are essential infrastructures to ensure a comfortable and safe visit, especially in the most frequented and accessible areas, such as the Nazaré Lighthouse zone.

At the Nazaré Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is the epicenter for wave watching and, therefore, is where we find most of the services. There is ample Parking nearby, although, as we've already mentioned, it can get crowded. There are also public Baños/WC for our convenience. Inside the fort where the lighthouse is located, there is a small museum and a souvenir shop, where we can learn more about the history of big wave surfing and purchase some mementos of our visit to the beach Leiria.

Near the beach

Directly on the sand of Praia do Norte, services are limited, reflecting its wilder character. Don't expect to find showers or chiringuitos on the sand. However, on big wave days, and during the bathing season, there are Lifeguards present, monitoring the safety of surfers and visitors
