Strategically located at the mouth of the stunning Óbidos Lagoon, Praia do Bom Sucesso offers us a perfect combination of serene waters and the vigor of the Atlantic, creating a dynamic and always fascinating landscape.

When we think of Leiria beaches, we often imagine the wild and rocky coast, but Praia do Bom Sucesso breaks that stereotype, presenting itself as an extensive and peaceful sandy beach, bathed by waters that invite swimming and relaxation. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the sea breeze are the only soundtrack. We have had the pleasure of visiting it on several occasions and it has always surprised us with its ability to adapt to different plans: from a day of play with the little ones to an afternoon of reading in the sun, or even a revitalizing walk along the shore.

How to get to Praia do Bom Sucesso

Getting to Praia do Bom Sucesso is relatively straightforward, although, like many of Portugal's coastal gems, the car is undoubtedly the most comfortable and practical option. From the city of Leiria, the journey is approximately 50 kilometers, which translates to about 45-50 minutes of driving on well-maintained roads. If coming from Lisbon, the trip is about an hour and a quarter (around 100 kilometers) via the A8 motorway, which gifts us with landscapes of the Portuguese West. From Porto, the journey is longer, about two and a half hours (approximately 250 kilometers) via the A1 and A8.

Once we approach the area, we follow the signs towards Foz do Arelho and then towards Praia do Bom Sucesso. You will find a large free parking area, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. It's true that in high season it can fill up, but we have always found a spot, perhaps a bit farther away, but accessible. For those who prefer public transport, the option would be to take a bus to Caldas da Rainha or Foz do Arelho, and from there, a taxi or, if you're feeling energetic, a walk, although the latter option is more advisable if you are staying nearby. We always opt for the car to have the freedom to explore the surroundings, something we highly recommend.

The sand and the water

Praia do Bom Sucesso welcomes us with fine, golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot. It's the kind of sand that invites castle building, lying down without a towel, or simply feeling it slip through your fingers. Its expanse is considerable, allowing us to always find a personal space, even on the busiest days. It's perfect for long morning or sunset walks, when the colors of the sky mix with the shine of the wet sand, creating an unparalleled visual spectacle.

As for the water, this is where Praia do Bom Sucesso shows its fascinating duality. Being at the mouth of the Óbidos Lagoon, we have the option to enjoy two types of bathing. On one hand, the lagoon waters are noticeably warmer and calmer, almost like a natural pool, ideal for young children and those seeking a relaxing dip without waves. Furthermore, the area facing directly onto the Atlantic offers us the refreshing and invigorating waters of the ocean, with waves that, while they can be stronger, are perfect for those who enjoy a good swim with some movement. We have always found the waters clean and clear, a reflection of the beach's commitment to the Blue Flag that flies proudly, guaranteeing its quality and sustainability.

Among the services we greatly value are the showers and public toilets/WCs, always clean and well-maintained, something essential after a day at the beach. The presence of lifeguards during the bathing season gives us great peace of mind, especially when visiting this Leiria beach with children. The lifeguards are always attentive, monitoring the area and offering assistance if needed. Furthermore, the beach offers the possibility to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers, allowing us to travel lighter and enjoy the Portuguese sun to the fullest without worrying about carrying our own equipment.

Dining options and parking

To satisfy your appetite or simply enjoy a refreshing drink, Praia do Bom Sucesso has several chiringuitos and small restaurants right on the beach or very close by. Here we can enjoy everything from simple sandwiches and ice creams to more elaborate dishes of local cuisine, with the sea as a backdrop. The offer is varied and we have always found something we liked. And as mentioned, the parking is spacious and easily accessible, a detail that makes a big difference in the comfort of our visit. While it does not have full accessibility for people with very reduced mobility in all its areas, there are walkways and ramps at some points that facilitate access to the sand.
