How to Get to Praia do Tonel

Getting to Praia do Tonel is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward if we plan well. The beach is located near Sagres, at the southwestern tip of the Portuguese Algarve, within the district of Faro. For most visitors, the most comfortable option is a private car or a rental vehicle. From Faro Airport, which is the main entry point for many international travelers to this region of Portugal, the drive takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes. We will take the A22 motorway west towards Portimão and Lagos, and then follow the signs to Sagres via the N125. Once in Sagres, the signage to the beaches, including Praia do Tonel, is quite clear.

Access and Parking

One of the advantages of Praia do Tonel is its relatively easy access. There is an unpaved parking area right above the beach, at the top of the cliffs. Although it is not a formal parking lot with marked spaces, there is usually enough room for vehicles, even in high season, although it can be busier on days with good weather and surf. From the parking area, the descent to the sand is via a ramp or a dirt path that, while not overly difficult, is not suitable for people with very limited mobility or baby strollers. It is important to wear comfortable shoes for this short walk and to be cautious, especially if the ground is wet.

Public Transport

If we prefer not to drive, public transport offers some alternatives, although less direct. From Faro or Lagos, we can take a bus from the EVA Transportes company that will take us to Sagres. Schedules vary depending on the season, so we recommend checking them in advance. Once in Sagres, Praia do Tonel is within walking distance from the town center (about 15-20 minutes), or we can opt for a local taxi if we have a lot of surf gear or simply prefer comfort. It is an excellent way to enjoy the coastal landscape as we approach this magnificent beach in the Algarve.
