Located in the municipality of Lagoa, very close to Carvoeiro and a stone's throw from Faro, this beach is one of those wonders that stays in your memory long after you've visited. It's not just any beach; it's a small paradise that invites us to explore, marvel, and disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Imagine a cove of golden sand, bathed by turquoise waters and protected by imposing limestone cliffs, sculpted by wind and sea over millennia. Its most distinctive feature, and what makes it an unforgettable experience, is its access: a tunnel carved into the rock that transports us to a dream world.

From the moment we set foot on the path leading to Praia do Carvalho, we begin to feel that special atmosphere. It's a beach that, despite its growing popularity, has managed to retain a wild and authentic charm. You won't find large resorts right on the sand or an endless row of 'chiringuitos' here, and that is precisely part of its appeal. It's a place for nature lovers, for those seeking a more intimate spot, and for those who enjoy exploring the wonders the sea has created.

How to Get to Praia do Carvalho

Getting to Praia do Carvalho is part of the adventure, and this is something we always like to highlight. If you're coming by car, you'll most likely head towards Carvoeiro or Lagoa. From there, following the signs to the beach is relatively straightforward. There is a free parking lot at the top of the cliff, although, as expected in the summer months, it can fill up quickly. Our advice is to arrive early if you want to secure a good spot and avoid the crowds.

Once parked, the real journey begins. We'll head towards a path that leads to the edge of the cliff. This is where the famous access is revealed: a tunnel hand-carved into the rock. It's an experience in itself, almost like entering a secret cave. The tunnel is short and well-lit naturally by its openings, but its uniqueness makes it memorable. After passing through it, we'll find stairs, also carved into the rock, that gently descend to the sand. It's important to consider that, due to this type of access, the beach is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or for baby strollers. But for most, it's a small effort that is richly rewarded upon reaching the sand.

The Sand and the Water

The sand of Praia do Carvalho is, like in many Algarve beaches, of a fine and soft golden texture. It's perfect for lying down, for children to build sandcastles, or simply to feel it between your fingers while relaxing under the sun. The contrast of the golden sand with the intense blue of the ocean and the ochre of the cliffs creates an absolutely stunning color palette, worthy of any postcard. We love the feeling of stepping on this sand, which warms gently under the Portuguese sun.

But if there's something that truly captivates us about Praia do Carvalho, it's its waters. They are incredibly crystal-clear, with shades ranging from emerald turquoise to a deep blue, depending on the sunlight and depth. The water's transparency invites you for a swim and is ideal for snorkeling, allowing us to observe the rich marine life that inhabits the submerged rocks. The waters are usually calm, protected by the surrounding cliffs, making them very pleasant for swimming. Feeling the freshness of the Atlantic on a hot day is a delight, and the underwater visibility is so good that we often find ourselves watching small fish and underwater rock formations without needing to venture far from the shore.

Services and Facilities

As we've already mentioned, Praia do Carvalho is not a massified beach with a wide range of services, and this is precisely what contributes to its 'wild' charm. We highly value that it retains this more natural essence. However, there are some basic services that we can find and that are important for our comfort.

Primarily, the most relevant service is the availability of Parking at the top of the cliff. It's a free parking lot, which is always an advantage, but, as in many points of interest in the Algarve, it can fill up quickly in high season. Our advice is to arrive early to avoid problems and secure a good spot.

During the summer months, and for our peace of mind, the beach has Lifeguard service. This is essential, especially if we're with children or if we like to swim out to sea. Knowing that there are professionals watching over our safety always gives us extra confidence to fully enjoy swimming and water activities. Lifeguards are usually present from June to September, approximately.

What we won't find directly on the beach are showers, public toilets, permanent 'chiringuitos', or rentals of umbrellas and sunbeds. This means we must be prepared: bring our own water, some food, towels, and an umbrella if we want shade. Sometimes, in high season, mobile vendors with drinks or ice cream may appear, but it's not guaranteed. This lack of permanent infrastructure is, for us, part of its appeal, as it helps keep the beach in a more pristine and natural state, away from excessive commercialization. It's an invitation to simplicity and connection with nature.

Choosing the best time to visit Prai
