From our first visit, Praia do Amado captivated us with its untamed beauty and vibrant energy. Located in the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, in the district of Faro, Portugal, this beach is much more than just a stretch of sand; it's a sanctuary for surfers, a refuge for nature lovers, and a living canvas of the Atlantic's power. With its impressive schist and sandstone cliffs embracing a wide strip of golden sand, Amado offers a visual spectacle that changes with the tides and seasons, but always maintains its majesty.

For us, Praia do Amado represents the essence of the Portuguese Atlantic coast: wild, powerful, and authentic. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing us to connect with the roar of the waves and the sea breeze. It's one of those Portugal beaches that, once you know it, is etched in your memory. Its fame as one of the best surf spots in Europe attracts enthusiasts from all over the world, from beginners to professionals, all seeking to master its famous waves. But even if surfing isn't your thing, the beach offers ample opportunities for walking, relaxing, and simply admiring the grandeur of the landscape.

How to Get to Praia do Amado

Getting to Praia do Amado is part of the adventure and offers us the chance to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of the western Algarve. Although the reference municipality/city is Faro, the beach is actually located in the municipality of Aljezur, within the district of Faro, on the vicentine coast. The most comfortable way to get there is by car, which gives us total freedom to explore the area at our own pace.

From Faro, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and the route. We'll take the A22 (Via do Infante) west towards Portimão and Lagos, and then follow the signs to Aljezur or Carrapateira. Once near Carrapateira, the signs to 'Praia do Amado' are clear. There is an asphalt road that descends directly to the beach parking lot. The parking is spacious and free, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

For those who prefer public transport, the options are more limited. We can take a bus from Faro to Lagos or Portimão, and then another bus to Aljezur. From Aljezur, access to the beach is more complicated without a car. Some surf schools or local accommodations may offer shuttle services, but there is no regular bus line that goes directly to Amado's sand. For this reason, renting a car is, without a doubt, the best option for a comfortable and complete visit to this magnificent Faro beach.

The Sand and the Water

When we step onto the sand of Praia do Amado, we immediately feel its fine, golden texture under our feet. It's soft sand, perfect for building sandcastles, for a barefoot walk, or simply for lying down and enjoying the sun. The beach is quite extensive, approximately 600 meters long, which ensures that, even on the busiest days, we will always find a quiet corner for ourselves. The geology of the area is fascinating, with dark rock formations that contrast beautifully with the gold of the sand and the blue of the ocean. These rocks, often exposed at low tide, create small coves and natural pools, ideal for exploring with children or simply for admiring.

The waters of Praia do Amado are, as is characteristic of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, cool and invigorating. The water temperature varies depending on the time of year, being warmer in summer and early autumn, but it never reaches the tropical temperatures of the Mediterranean. This coolness is precisely what attracts many surfers, as it contributes to the formation of consistent and powerful waves. The water quality is excellent, a fact confirmed by the Blue Flag that the beach holds year after year, a seal of guarantee of its cleanliness and the services it offers. Although the waves are its main attraction, on calm days, the water becomes crystal clear and tempting for a refreshing swim. However, we must always be aware of the currents and follow the lifeguards' instructions, especially if we are not used to Atlantic conditions.

Services and Facilities

Praia do Amado, despite its wild appearance, is well equipped with essential services to ensure a comfortable and safe stay. As we mentioned, the beach has a Blue Flag, which already indicates a high standard of quality in its facilities and environmental management. For our peace of mind, during the bathing season (usually from June to September), the beach has a Lifeguard service, with professionals watching over swimmers and surfers. It is crucial to respect their instructions, especially regarding bathing and surfing zones.

Regarding hygiene, we will find Showers to wash off the sand and salt after a dip, as well as clean and accessible Bathrooms/Toilets. For those arriving by car, the Parking is spacious and free, located right above the beach with relatively easy access, although it may require a short walk down a ramp. The gastronomic offer is concentrated in several Chiringuitos or small beachfront restaurants or in their vicinity. These establishments usually offer everything from snacks and refreshing drinks to fresh fish and seafood dishes, perfect for replenishing energy after a surf session or a long day at the beach. The atmosphere in these chiringuitos is relaxed and authentic, very much in tune with the spirit of the Vicentine Coast.
