This beach, often described as one of the most picturesque in the region, is a true treasure that combines natural majesty with infrastructure designed for everyone's enjoyment. How to Get to Praia de Vale Centeanes
Getting to Praia de Vale Centeanes is relatively straightforward, especially if traveling by car, which offers the most flexibility to explore this and other Algarve beaches. The beach is located in the municipality of Lagoa, very close to Carvoeiro, and a reasonable distance from the city of Faro, the provincial capital.
By Car
From Faro, the drive usually takes about 45-50 minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) heading west (Portimão/Lagos) and exit at junction 6 towards Lagoa. From Lagoa, the signs to Carvoeiro and then to Praia de Vale Centeanes are well marked. There is a free public parking lot at the top of the cliff, right next to the restaurant and the beach access. Although not huge, there are usually spaces, especially if we arrive early in the morning or late afternoon. During the peak summer season, it can fill up quickly, so we recommend planning your arrival.
Public Transport
Public transport can be a bit more complicated, but it's feasible. From Faro, we can take a train or bus to Lagoa or Portimão, and from there, a local bus (for example, the Vamus Algarve line 110, which connects Lagoa with Carvoeiro) that drops us nearby. However, the nearest stop may require a 10-15 minute walk to the beach, as buses don't usually go directly to the viewpoint. Another option is a taxi or a ride-hailing service from Lagoa or Carvoeiro, which is more convenient if we don't have a car.
Beach Access
Once at the viewpoint, access to the sand is via a well-maintained stone staircase. Although it's not an excessively long staircase, it does require a minimum of mobility, and therefore, full accessibility for people with reduced mobility or large baby strollers can be a challenge. However, the views from the top are spectacular and worth it even if you can only enjoy it from there.
The Sand and the Water
Praia de Vale Centeanes is a feast for the senses, and much of its charm lies in the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. We were amazed by the combination.
The Sand
The sand here is fine and of an intense golden color, characteristic of the Algarve. It's soft to the touch and perfect for building sandcastles, walking barefoot, or simply lying down to enjoy the sun. At low tide, the sand extends in a relatively wide strip, although its length is not excessive, giving it a cozy and sheltered atmosphere. It's impeccably clean, a testament to the care and consideration given to this Faro beach, and contributes to it proudly holding its Blue Flag.
The Water
The waters of Vale Centeanes are famous for their transparency and turquoise blue hue. They are incredibly crystal-clear, making them ideal for snorkeling and simply observing the seabed. The water temperature is generally pleasant, especially from late spring to early autumn, when the sun warms the Atlantic. Being protected by the high cliffs, the cove usually has calm waters, with gentle waves that make it very safe for swimming, even for the little ones. It's a delight to immerse yourself in them and feel the freshness of the ocean.
Rock Formations
In addition to the sand and water, the surroundings of the beach are dominated by the impressive sandstone rock formations. These rocks, with their caves and grottos, add an element of mystery and adventure. During low tide, it's possible to explore some of the small caves that form at the base of the cliffs, always with caution and awareness of the tides. It is these formations that make Vale Centeanes such a photogenic beach, offering endless angles and perspectives to capture its beauty.
