How to Get to Praia de los Careanos

Getting to Praia de los Careanos is part of the adventure and, although it is not the most accessible beach in the region, its charm is well worth the effort. For those of us coming from outside Portugal, the nearest airport is Faro Airport, located about 70 kilometers from Portimão. From there, the most comfortable and flexible option is to rent a car. The A22 motorway, known as 'Via do Infante', will take us directly to the vicinity of Portimão in about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Once in Portimão, the beach is located in the western area, very close to the famous Praia da Rocha.

Access and Parking

From the center of Portimão or Praia da Rocha, a short 5 to 10-minute drive will leave us near the beach. Parking around Praia de los Careanos is usually on adjacent streets, which can be a challenge during high season, so we recommend arriving early. There are also some paid parking lots in the vicinity of Praia da Rocha which, although a bit farther away, guarantee a place to leave the vehicle. The final access to the sand is via stairs descending the cliffs. Although the path is safe, it is not ideal for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers, which helps maintain a more intimate and less crowded atmosphere than other beaches in Faro.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Praia de los Careanos, the first thing we notice is the quality of its sand. It is fine sand, soft and of an intense golden color that shines under the Algarve sun. Its texture is perfect for spreading out a towel and relaxing, or for children to easily build sandcastles. For us, the presence of lifeguards during the high season is a key point, as it provides the necessary peace of mind to enjoy swimming and let children play more freely. Their constant vigilance contributes to a relaxed and safe atmosphere for everyone.

Amenities by the Beach

On the sand itself or very close to it, it is common to find options for renting sun umbrellas and sun loungers, allowing us to secure a comfortable spot protected from the sun all day. There are also small chiringuitos that offer refreshing drinks, ice creams, and some light snacks, perfect for a bite without straying too far from the shore. Although they are not large restaurants, they serve their purpose perfectly. Showers are usually available at key access points to the beach, allowing us to rinse off the sand and salt before returning. As for restrooms/WCs, while they are not always directly on the sand, they are usually found nearby, associated with the chiringuitos or nearby establishments, thus facilitating the comfort of bathers. The parking, as we already mentioned, is on adjacent streets, although in high season it may require a short search or the use of nearby paid parking lots.
