We venture into the heart of the Portuguese Algarve to discover one of its most precious treasures: Praia de Carvoeiro. This small but captivating cove is the soul of a charming fishing village that bears the same name. When we first arrived, we were immediately captivated by the image unfolding before our eyes: traditional white houses perched on ochre-toned cliffs, gently descending to the golden sand that kisses the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic. It's no wonder it's one of the most photographed and beloved beaches in the region.

How to Get to Praia de Carvoeiro

Getting to Praia de Carvoeiro is relatively straightforward, although we must consider that the village, being small and built on a hill, can have narrow streets. We recommend several options to make your journey as comfortable as possible.

By Car

If you're traveling by car, which is the most common and flexible way to explore the Algarve, you should take the A22 (Via do Infante) and then turn off towards Lagoa/Carvoeiro. Once in Carvoeiro, follow the signs to the village center and the beach. There is a paid public car park at the top of the village, a few minutes' walk from the beach, and some limited street parking in the adjacent areas. During the high season, finding parking can be a challenge, so we advise arriving early.

By Public Transport

Although less direct, public transport is an option. You can take a bus from Faro or Portimão to Lagoa, and from there, a local bus or taxi to Carvoeiro. The connections may require patience, but they allow you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving.

From Faro Airport

The nearest airport is Faro (FAO), approximately 60 kilometers away. From there, the fastest option is to rent a car or take a taxi/private transfer, which will take about 45-60 minutes. There are also bus services from the airport to Faro train station, and then train or bus to Lagoa, before finally reaching Carvoeiro. For us, the comfort of a rental car is unbeatable for exploring the region at our own pace.

The Sand and Water

Praia de Carvoeiro offers us a unique sensory experience, where the quality of the sand and the purity of the water are undisputed protagonists. Stepping onto the beach, our feet sink into fine, golden sand, almost caressing, inviting us to take off our shoes and enjoy every step. It's the perfect type of sand for building castles, for a relaxing stroll, or simply for laying out a towel and letting the Algarve sun take over. Its warm tone contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the Atlantic, creating a color palette that is a delight for the eyes.

The waters of Praia de Carvoeiro are, in a word, sublime. We are faced with a generally calm and crystal-clear sea, whose transparency allows us to easily observe the seabed. This is largely due to the natural protection offered by the surrounding cliffs, which act as a barrier against stronger currents. The water temperature, although refreshing, is pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and a revitalizing dip. The cleanliness of the water is exceptional, a factor that contributes to this beach proudly flying the Blue Flag, a seal of quality certifying its environmental excellence and services. For us, immersing ourselves in these waters is one of the greatest delights offered by the Portugal beaches.

One of the great advantages of Praia de Carvoeiro is the complete range of services and facilities it offers, guaranteeing a comfortable and pleasant stay for all its visitors. We highly value convenience, and here we find it in abundance.

From the moment we arrive, we notice that everything is designed for enjoyment. The beach has showers to wash off the sand and salt after a swim, and clean, well-maintained bathrooms/WCs, a detail we always appreciate. For those arriving by car, there are parking options nearby, although as mentioned, in high season it can be tricky to find a spot.

Safety is paramount, and the presence of lifeguards during the bathing season provides us with additional peace of mind, especially if traveling with children. Furthermore, for days of intense sun, it's possible to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers, allowing us to relax without having to carry our own equipment.

The gastronomic offering is another strong point. Right on the sand and the promenade, we find several chiringuitos and restaurants where we can enjoy anything from a soft drink or ice cream to a delicious meal with sea views. The proximity of the village also means there are more options just a few steps away.
