Introduction
Welcome to one of the most spectacular treasures of the Portuguese Algarve: Praia de Benagil. This coastal gem, located in the municipality of Lagoa, near the charming town of Carvoeiro, is not just a beach, but the gateway to one of the world's most photographed natural wonders: the Algar de Benagil, a stunning sea cave with an opening in its roof that allows sunlight to illuminate its sandy interior.
When we think of dream beaches in Portugal, Praia de Benagil immediately comes to mind. Its golden sands, calm waters, and, of course, the majesty of its cave, make it an essential destination for any traveler seeking to combine natural beauty with a touch of adventure. It's a place that invites admiration, photography, and connection with the strength and delicacy of the marine nature.
How to Get to Praia de Benagil
Getting to Praia de Benagil is a fundamental part of the adventure, and we will guide you through the best options. The beach is located on the central coast of the Algarve, about 60 kilometers west of Faro and about 20 kilometers east of Portimão.
By Car
The most comfortable way to get there is by car. From Faro or from the A22 (the Algarve motorway), we should take the exits towards Lagoa or Carvoeiro and follow the signs to Benagil. The road is picturesque, often winding through fields of olive and almond trees.
The parking at Praia de Benagil is limited and can be a challenge, especially during the summer months. We recommend arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot. There are also paid parking options nearby, or we can choose to park a bit further away and enjoy a short walk to the beach.
Public Transport
Direct public transport to Praia de Benagil is scarce. We can take a bus to Lagoa or Carvoeiro, and from there, a taxi or a ride-hailing service will be the best option to cover the last few kilometers. It is not the most practical option if our goal is comfort and speed.
Beach Access
Once we arrive in the area, access to the main Benagil beach is via a path and stairs descending from the cliff. It's a relatively easy access, but not fully accessible for people with very limited mobility.
Access to the Cave: The Algar de Benagil
This is where the real magic resides. The famous Algar de Benagil is not accessible on foot from the beach. The safest and recommended way to explore the cave is by sea:
- Kayak or Paddleboard: We can rent kayaks or paddleboards directly at Praia de Benagil. This is one of our favorite ways to explore, as it allows us to paddle at our own pace, enter the cave, and enjoy its beauty in peace. However, we must be aware of sea conditions and our own physical ability.
- Boat Tours: Numerous companies offer boat tours from Benagil, Carvoeiro, Portimão, and even Albufeira. These tours take us to the cave and often include stops at other grottoes and rock formations along the coast. It's an excellent option for those who prefer a guided and less physically demanding experience.
- Swimming: Although it is possible to swim to the cave from Praia de Benagil (it's about 200 meters away), we only recommend it for experienced swimmers and when the sea is exceptionally calm, and always outside peak boat traffic hours. Safety is paramount, and boat traffic can be dangerous.
The Sand and Water
Praia de Benagil captivates us with its sand. It's a golden, fine, and soft-to-the-touch sand, perfect for lying down and feeling the warmth of the Algarve sun. Walking barefoot, we notice its pleasant texture, ideal for children who enjoy building sandcastles or simply playing by the shore.
The waters of Benagil are mostly transparent and of a beautiful turquoise color. Generally calm, especially during the spring and summer months, they are ideal for a refreshing swim. The water quality is excellent, allowing us to enjoy a dip without worries. Although Benagil beach does not fly the Blue Flag, its waters are consistently clean and suitable for bathing.
The seabed near the shore is predominantly sandy, which facilitates entering and exiting the water. Further out, we can find some interesting rock formations that invite snorkeling and discovering local marine life. We always recommend bringing goggles and a snorkel to explore a bit beneath the surface.
Services and Facilities
Despite being a relatively small beach focused on its natural appeal, Praia de Benagil offers some essential services for our comfort, without becoming a mass-tourism beach with extensive infrastructure, which helps maintain its charm.
- Chiringuito/Restaurant: On the beach itself, we find a small establishment that functions as a beach bar and restaurant. Here we can enjoy cold drinks, ice cream, snacks, and simple meals, often with specialties of fresh fish. It's the perfect place to recharge after an adventure in the cave.
- Equipment Rental: As we already mentioned, this is a key service. We can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and sometimes even snorkeling equipment, directly on the beach. This greatly facilitates our visit to the Algar de Benagil.
- Lifeguard Service: During the peak bathing season (usually from June to September), the beach has a lifeguard service. We always appreciate this presence, as it gives us greater peace of mind, especia
