Introduction
From our first visit, Praia de Amoreira captivated us with its unique beauty and unmistakable atmosphere. Located in the heart of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, in the Portuguese Algarve (and although the municipality is Aljezur, administratively it belongs to the district of Faro), this beach is much more than just a stretch of sand; it's a vibrant ecosystem where the Aljezur river embraces the powerful Atlantic Ocean, creating a landscape of contrasts that few places can offer. It's one of those Portugal beaches that stays etched in your memory, a destination that combines the thrill of the waves with the serenity of its inland waters.
We, as beach tourism experts and lovers of authentic destinations, consider Praia de Amoreira a must-stop for those seeking a complete beach experience. Here, nature shows itself in all its splendor: imposing cliffs sculpted by wind and sea, golden dunes that harbor rich biodiversity, and an expanse of fine sand that invites rest and exploration. It's a place where time seems to slow down, allowing us to connect with the surroundings and enjoy every moment, whether under the sun or watching a sunset that paints the sky in orange and violet hues. Without a doubt, it's one of the Faro beaches with a wilder and more genuine charm.
How to get to Praia de Amoreira
Getting to Praia de Amoreira is part of the adventure. From the town of Aljezur, the drive takes about 10-15 minutes along a road that winds through rural landscapes and green hills, offering previews of the coastline that already announce the beauty awaiting us. We always recommend taking the N120 and then turning onto the M1001 towards the beach. The signage is clear, which makes access easy even for first-time visitors to the area.
By car
It is, without a doubt, the most practical option. Upon arriving at the beach, you'll find a large and free parking lot, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. From the parking lot, wooden walkways guide us directly to the sand, making access comfortable and easy. We always advise arriving early in the high season to secure a good spot, although the beach's expanse has rarely left us without space.
Public transport
Public transport to Praia de Amoreira is limited. There is no direct bus line that reaches the sand. The closest option would be to take a bus to Aljezur and, from there, consider a taxi or private transport service. For us, the freedom offered by a car is unbeatable for exploring this area of the Costa Vicentina at our own pace.
The sand and the water
The sand at Praia de Amoreira has a fine and golden texture that invites you to walk barefoot and build sandcastles. It's a pleasure to feel it underfoot as we walk along the shore or relax in the sun. The predominant ground type is, of course, sand, making it a very pleasant place to lie down and enjoy the day.
As for the water, we encounter a fascinating duality. On one side, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which are usually cool and invigorating, perfect for refreshing and enjoying the waves. Additionally, the estuary of the Aljezur river, which flows into the sea, creates a lagoon with much warmer, calmer, and shallower waters. This contrast is one of the biggest attractions of Praia de Amoreira beach.
For us, the river part is ideal for the little ones, who can play and splash safely, while adults can venture into the sea to swim or practice water sports. The cleanliness of the water is exceptional, a testament to the environmental quality of the area, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction, confirming its excellence in terms of water quality, safety, and services. We love the transparency of its waters, which allows us to see the sandy bottom and, sometimes, even small fish.
Services and facilities
Praia de Amoreira offers a good range of services, considering its natural and somewhat wilder character compared to urban beaches. We always value the presence of essential amenities that make our stay more pleasant without distorting the essence of the place.
Among the services we find, the following stand out:
- Lifeguards: During the bathing season, the beach has lifeguards, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we're traveling with children or venturing into the Atlantic waves. Safety is always a priority for us.
- Parking: As mentioned, there is a large free parking lot that greatly facilitates access to the beach.
- Chiringuitos: Generally, there are one or two chiringuitos or restaurants right on the beach where we can enjoy a meal or a refreshing drink. They are perfect places to try the area's fresh fish or simply have a coffee with sea views. We always take the opportunity to recharge our energy.
- Bathrooms/WC: The chiringuitos usually have bathrooms available for customers, and sometimes there are public facilities nearby. It's a basic but indispensable service that we always appreciate.
- Showers: Most of the time, we find showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home. A small detail that makes a difference.
