How to Get to Praia da Bordeira

Getting to Praia da Bordeira is part of the adventure and gradually immerses us in its natural atmosphere. It's located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, a few kilometers north of the small, picturesque village of Carrapateira, in the municipality of Aljezur, district of Faro. The most comfortable and recommended way to get there is by car, as public transport in this more remote part of the coast is quite limited.

By Car

From Faro, the journey takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic and the route. We'll take the A22 (Via do Infante) west towards Lagos and then the N125 or local roads that will take us to Aljezur and, finally, to Carrapateira. Once in Carrapateira, there is clear signage towards Praia da Bordeira. Access is via a paved road that leads to a large parking lot situated on top of the cliffs, already offering spectacular panoramic views of the beach and the Carrapateira river estuary.

Parking and Beach Access

The parking lot is spacious and, although it can fill up in high season, we'll generally find a spot. From the parking lot, several wooden walkways lead us to the beach. These walkways are essential to protect the fragile dune ecosystem and provide a comfortable and safe path to the sand. The descent is gradual and accessible, although it is not adapted for people with reduced mobility due to the nature of the terrain and the final stairs that may be necessary to reach the sand at some points. It's important to remember that we are in a natural park, so we must respect the signage and not stray from the marked paths to preserve the local flora and fauna.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Praia da Bordeira is one of its greatest attractions: an endless stretch of fine, golden sand that seems to blend with the horizon. Unlike many rocky coves of the eastern Algarve, here we find a vast, open sandy beach, perfect for long walks or simply to find our own corner of tranquility. This lagoon with calmer waters is a counterpoint to the ocean's fury and is an ideal place for children to play in shallow waters when the river has flow.
