And Praia de los Alteirinhos, located in the charming municipality of Odemira, within the district of Beja, in the heart of Portuguese Alentejo, is undoubtedly one of those magical places that captivated us from the very first moment. This beach is not just a stretch of sand; it is an invitation to disconnect, a canvas where the intense blue of the Atlantic merges with the gold of the sand and the ochre of the imposing cliffs that embrace it. It is a destination that makes us feel in perfect harmony with nature, offering us a living postcard of the Vicentine Coast.
The Praia de los Alteirinhos beach is a true hidden treasure, though well-known among lovers of the Alentejo coast. Its proximity to the picturesque village of Zambujeira do Mar gives it an additional charm, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility of the beach without giving up the services and local life offered by the village. It is one of the Beja beaches that best represents the essence of the Alentejo coastline: wild yet accessible, serene yet with the energy of the ocean. Here, every wave breaking on the shore seems to tell us a thousand-year-old story, and every corner invites us to explore, to breathe deeply, and to simply be.
From the moment we set foot on its sand, Praia de los Alteirinhos envelops us in an atmosphere of peace. We find ourselves before a generously sized beach, sheltered by high cliffs that not only offer protection from the wind but also create a dramatic and photogenic landscape. Its waters, of astonishing transparency, invite us to a refreshing and revitalizing swim, characteristic of the Portuguese Atlantic. It is a place where families find safety and fun, where nature lovers can get lost in long walks, and where anyone seeking a respite from daily hustle will find their ideal refuge. It is, certainly, one of the Portugal beaches that deserves a prominent place in any travel itinerary.
How to Get to Praia de los Alteirinhos
Getting to Praia de los Alteirinhos is an exciting part of the adventure, as we delve into the beautiful Alentejo region. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable and flexible option to explore this area of Portugal, allowing us to enjoy the landscapes and make spontaneous stops. If we are coming from Lisbon, the journey takes approximately two and a half to three hours. We will take the A2 motorway heading south, then turn off onto the IC1 and finally the N120 towards Odemira and Zambujeira do Mar. From Faro, in the Algarve, the trip is similar in duration, following the N120 north.
Access and Parking
Once we approach Zambujeira do Mar, the signage to the Praia de los Alteirinhos beach is clear. The beach is a short distance from the village center, which facilitates access. At the top of the cliffs overlooking the beach, we will find a spacious free Parking area, specially designed for visitors. This parking lot usually has enough space, even in high season, although it is always advisable to arrive early during the summer months to secure a good spot. From the parking lot, the descent to the sand is via a series of well-maintained stairs and a ramp, making access relatively easy for most visitors, though it is not fully accessible for people with very reduced mobility directly onto the sand.
Public Transport
Although the car is the most recommended, it is also possible to reach Zambujeira do Mar by public transport. The Rede Expressos company offers bus connections from Lisbon and other major cities in Portugal. Once in Zambujeira do Mar, Praia de los Alteirinhos is a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from the village center. Alternatively, we can take a local taxi for a quicker journey. We always advise checking bus schedules in advance, especially outside the high season, as frequency may be lower.
The Sand and the Water
Praia de los Alteirinhos is a true delight for the senses, and the quality of its sand and water are key factors in this. We are always impressed by the softness and color of its sand. It is a fine and golden sand, stretching for about 350 meters, inviting us to walk barefoot, build sandcastles, or simply lie down and feel its warmth under the sun. The predominant ground type is, as expected, sand, making it a very comfortable beach for all beach activities. In some spots, especially near the cliffs or at the ends, we can find some rock formations that add interest to the landscape and are perfect for exploring at low tide, looking for small sea creatures.
The Atlantic Waters
The waters of the Praia de los Alteirinhos beach are a reflection of the purity of the Portuguese Atlantic: clean, clear, and with a tone between turquoise blue and emerald that captivates us. The water quality is excellent, as evidenced by the regular presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that guarantees us not only the cleanliness of the water but also environmental management and safety. It is important to consider that, being an Atlantic beach, the water temperature tends to be cool, even in the height of summer. For us, it is a revitalizing coolness, perfect for combating the heat of the sunniest days and for toning the body. The transparency is such that, on calm days, we can easily see the seabed, inviting to
