How to Get to Playa Troncones

Getting to this paradise is simpler than it seems, although its relative remoteness is part of its charm and what helps preserve its tranquil atmosphere. The main access route is through the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH), which receives domestic and international flights. Once we land there, the adventure continues by road.

From the airport, Playa Troncones is approximately 40-50 minutes away by car, heading north. There are several transportation options: we can choose an authorized airport taxi, which will take us directly to our accommodation. Another alternative is to rent a car, which we highly recommend if we plan to explore the surroundings and have total freedom of movement during our stay. The road is safe and well-signposted, offering us spectacular views of Guerrero's coastal landscape as we approach our destination.

For those traveling from other cities in Mexico, it is also possible to arrive by bus to Zihuatanejo and from there take a taxi or a 'colectivo' (shared van) to Playa Troncones. While it may be a slightly longer journey, it is an economical option and allows us to immerse ourselves even more in the local culture from the very beginning. Whatever option we choose, the road to Playa Troncones is the perfect prelude to the magic that awaits us.

The Sand and Water

When stepping onto Playa Troncones, the first thing we notice is its sand: a mix of golden and darker tones, with a texture that varies from fine to medium. It's not the white, pristine sand we find in the Caribbean, but a more robust sand that reflects the wild and authentic nature of the Pacific coast. It's perfect for long barefoot walks, feeling the earth under our feet and the sun caressing our skin. Along its approximately 3.5 kilometers of length, we find wide, open stretches, ideal for laying out a towel and enjoying the sun, as well as areas with rock formations that add a dramatic touch to the landscape and are perfect for exploring.

The waters of Playa Troncones are typically warm, inviting us to dive in and refresh ourselves from the tropical heat. However, it's important to remember that we are on the Pacific, which means the waves can be significant and the currents strong, especially at certain times of the year. This is precisely what makes it a magnet for surfers, but requires caution for swimmers, especially those not accustomed to ocean waters. We always recommend asking locals or our accommodation staff about the day's sea conditions.

The water clarity varies depending on the season and weather conditions, but it is generally clear, with emerald and deep blue hues. Don't expect spectacular coral reefs right on the shore, but marine life exists and, with a bit of luck and snorkeling gear, we can glimpse some fish near the rocky areas.
