How to Get to Playa Tambor

Getting to Playa Tambor is part of the adventure, and fortunately, there are several options to suit different preferences and budgets. We explored the main routes to make your journey as pleasant as possible.

By Air

The fastest way is to fly. Tambor Airport (TMU) is located a few minutes from the beach and receives regular domestic flights from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. Airlines like Sansa and Green Airways offer short and scenic flights. Once in Tambor, taxis or pre-arranged transfers take us directly to our accommodation. This option is ideal if we want to maximize our time on the beach.

By Land and Sea

For those who prefer a more immersive experience, the combination of car and ferry is an excellent alternative. If we depart from San José, the most common route is to drive to Puntarenas (approximately 2 hours), where we take a Naviera Tambor ferry to Paquera. The ferry ride lasts about 70-90 minutes and is a charming experience, offering panoramic views of the Gulf of Nicoya. From Paquera, a car journey of approximately 45 minutes takes us to Playa Tambor. This option gives us the flexibility to explore the peninsula at our own pace.

By Bus

If we are traveling on a tighter budget, public transportation is a viable option. There are buses connecting San José with Puntarenas, and from there, we can take the ferry to Paquera. Once in Paquera, there are local buses or taxis that can take us to Tambor. It is the most economical option, although the most time-consuming.

Regardless of the option we choose, the journey to Playa Tambor is a perfect prelude to the tranquility that awaits us at this wonderful Puntarenas beach.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about the physical characteristics of Playa Tambor, its unique beauty immediately comes to mind. The sand here is different from what we might find on many other Costa Rica beaches; it is a dark grayish color, almost black in some areas, due to its volcanic origin. Its texture is predominantly fine, making it extremely pleasant to the touch under our feet. Walking barefoot along the shore is a pleasurable experience, a true caress for the senses. The type of ground is, as we have already mentioned, pure sand, which facilitates access and enjoyment for all visitors.

But if the sand captivates us, the water makes us fall in love. The waters of Playa Tambor are exceptionally calm, protected by the horseshoe shape of the bay. This creates an environment similar to a giant natural swimming pool, with soft and barely perceptible waves, making it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing without worries. The water temperature is warm and welcoming year-round, inviting us to immerse ourselves and enjoy long swims. The calmness of the waters is also a determining factor for its popularity among families, as it provides a safe environment for children to play and bathe.
