How to Get to Playa Tamarindo

Getting to Playa Tamarindo is relatively easy, which contributes to its popularity. The main international gateway to the Guanacaste region is the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR), located near the city of Liberia. We usually recommend flying directly to Liberia if possible, as it's only an hour and a half drive from Tamarindo.

From Liberia airport, we have several transportation options:

• Car rental: This is our preferred option if we plan to explore the surroundings of Playa Tamarindo and other Guanacaste beaches. It gives us the freedom to move at our own pace. There are several reputable car rental companies at the airport. The road to Tamarindo is in good condition, although the last few kilometers can be a bit rougher depending on the route.
• Private or shared shuttle: Numerous companies offer direct transportation services from LIR to Tamarindo. Shared shuttles are an economical and comfortable option if we are traveling alone or as a couple, while private ones offer greater flexibility and speed, ideal for groups or families. We always value the comfort of being picked up directly at the airport exit.
• Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport, but they are usually the most expensive option. It's important to negotiate the price in advance or make sure they use the taximeter (although for long trips they usually have fixed rates).
• Public bus: It's the most economical option, but also the slowest and requires more transfers. From Liberia, we would have to take a bus to Nicoya or Santa Cruz and then another to Tamarindo. It's not the most practical if we have a lot of surf gear or if we're looking for efficiency.

The Sand and the Water

The Playa Tamarindo beach seduces us with its extensive stretch of golden sand, which extends for approximately 1.5 kilometers. The sand is predominantly fine, with some stretches where we can find small seashells and fragments that give it a unique character. Walking barefoot, we feel a soft and pleasant texture under our feet, ideal for long walks at sunrise or sunset. The golden hue of the sand contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the ocean, creating a postcard-worthy landscape that invites us to relax and enjoy.

The water at Playa Tamarindo is, for the most part, warm and welcoming year-round, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius. This makes it a perfect place for swimming, splashing, or simply cooling off after a while under the tropical sun. The waters are generally clear, especially during the dry season, although visibility can vary depending on tides and wave conditions. It's not a primary destination for snorkeling from the shore, as the bottom is mostly sandy, but the warmth of the water is a constant delight.
