How to Get to Playa Saladilla

Getting to Playa Saladilla in Barahona is an essential part of the adventure and, although it requires a bit more planning than flying directly to a resort, the reward is worth it. The most common way for most international travelers is to fly into Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo. From there, we have several options to continue our journey south.

From Santo Domingo

• By rental car: This is, without a doubt, the option that gives us the most freedom to explore not only Playa Saladilla, but also the stunning surroundings of Barahona. The journey from Santo Domingo to Barahona takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and the stops we make. The main road is the DR-2 (Carretera Sánchez), which takes us directly south. It's a scenic route, with coastal and mountainous stretches that offer us spectacular views of the Dominican landscape. We recommend using a GPS or a maps app to make the journey easier.

• Public transportation: For those who prefer not to drive, there are comfortable bus services. Caribe Tours and Expreso Bávaro are the main companies offering regular routes from Santo Domingo to Barahona. The buses are air-conditioned and comfortable, making the trip a relaxing experience. Once at the Barahona bus station, we can take a taxi or a 'motoconcho' (motorcycle taxi) to get to Playa Saladilla, which is very close to the city center.

• Domestic flights: Although Barahona has a small airport (María Montez International Airport, BRX), domestic flights from Santo Domingo are not frequent or regular. Typically, this option is more used for private or cargo flights. Therefore, for the average traveler, the combination of an international flight to SDQ and then ground transportation is the most practical and efficient.

The Sand and Water

Stepping onto Playa Saladilla, we immediately notice a difference from the typical white-sand images of the Caribbean. Here, the sand is of a darker hue, a mix between grayish and ochre, with a mixed texture that sometimes includes small stones or pebbles polished by the sea. This characteristic is common in many Barahona beaches and on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, a result of the region's volcanic and mineralogical composition.
