How to Get to Playa Sabancuy

Getting to Playa Sabancuy is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite accessible. The beach is located in the municipality of Carmen, within the state of Campeche, Mexico. For us travelers, the main access routes are by road. If we come from the state capital, the city of Campeche, the journey is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car, covering a distance of about 160-180 kilometers. We must take federal highway 180 heading south, passing through towns like Champotón, until reaching the turnoff to Sabancuy. The road is generally in good condition, making the trip comfortable and picturesque, allowing us to enjoy the rural landscapes of Campeche.

Another popular option is to arrive from Ciudad del Carmen, an important port city with an airport. From Ciudad del Carmen, the journey is considerably shorter, around 45 minutes to 1 hour by car, traveling about 50-60 kilometers north on the same federal highway 180. This route is ideal if we fly into Ciudad del Carmen International Airport (CME) and then rent a car or take a taxi. Although there are local bus services connecting the main cities with Sabancuy, for us, the greatest flexibility and comfort is offered by a private or rental car, as it allows us to explore the surroundings at our own pace and bring all the necessary gear to fully enjoy Playa Sabancuy.

The Sand and Water

When we set foot on Playa Sabancuy, the first thing that impresses us is the quality of its sand. It is incredibly fine and soft sand, of a pearly white color that contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the sea and the green of the coastal vegetation. Walking barefoot on this natural carpet is a delight, a pure feeling of connection with the earth. The absence of sharp rocks or shells makes it a safe and comfortable place to walk, play, or simply relax on it, feeling its coolness under the Campeche sun. This characteristic makes it especially attractive for families and for those who enjoy long walks along the shore, observing the horizon and marine life.

Services and Facilities

We must be clear that Playa Sabancuy is not a mass tourism destination, and precisely therein lies much of its charm. Therefore, the services and facilities we find are rather basic and aimed at satisfying the essential needs of visitors, always maintaining a low profile that respects the natural environment. We value this authenticity, although it is important to go prepared. Mainly, we will find some local chiringuitos, small palapas where refreshing drinks and delicious dishes of fresh seafood, prepared on the spot, are served. These establishments usually also offer the rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, allowing us to enjoy shade and comfort during our stay on the sand.

Regarding infrastructure, parking is generally informal, available along the road or in designated areas near the chiringuitos, without a fixed cost in most cases. Bathrooms/WCs are usually available at the same chiringuitos, although it is good to manage expectations about their level of modernity and cleanliness. We should not expect elaborate public showers or permanent lifeguard centers like in other more developed beaches of Mexico. Safety is more of a personal responsibility, although during high seasons there may be a presence of local surveillance personnel.
