How to Get to Playa Rotilla

Getting to Playa Rotilla is part of the adventure and offers us a closer view of Cuban life. As it's not a main tourist destination, the options may be less direct than for others in Cuba, but perfectly feasible and often more interesting.

From Havana

From the capital, Havana, which is about 60-70 kilometers to the east, the most comfortable and popular way for us is by rental car or a private taxi. The journey usually takes approximately one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and the route. The main road is the Vía Blanca, which runs along the coast and offers interesting landscapes. It's a good opportunity to see the Cuban countryside and small settlements.

We can also opt for a shared taxi or 'almendrón', which are shared classic cars that run specific routes. These are more economical but require a bit more patience and negotiation. Ask for the route towards Santa Cruz del Norte or Guanabo, and from there you can take another local taxi to Playa Rotilla.

From Other Parts of Mayabeque or Matanzas

If we're coming from other towns in the Mayabeque province, such as San José de las Lajas (the provincial capital) or from the neighboring province of Matanzas, especially from the Jibacoa area, access is relatively straightforward. From Jibacoa, for example, Playa Rotilla is a few kilometers to the west, making it an easy excursion by car or local taxi. Cuban intercity buses (Guaguas) are a very economical option, but they are usually slow, crowded, and don't go directly to the beach, dropping us off on the main road, from where we would have to walk or take a bicycle taxi.

Transportation Tips

• Negotiate the price with taxis before starting the trip, especially if it's a private taxi.
• Bring local currency (CUP) for public or shared transport, although private taxis will accept foreign currency.
• Keep in mind that parking at Playa Rotilla is informal and free, usually along the road or in improvised spaces near the sand.

Don't expect a large reef for snorkeling here, but the water clarity does allow you to see small fish and enjoy a pleasant swim without surprises.

The type of seabed at the shore and in the first depths is predominantly sandy, which makes entering and exiting the sea easy and comfortable. There are no sharp rocks or corals near the shore that could be a problem, adding an extra layer of safety and comfort to the experience. For us, the combination of fine sand and calm waters is the hallmark of Playa Rotilla, a true paradise for those seeking the serenity of an authentic Caribbean beach.

We can taste fresh fried fish, tostones (fried plantains), congri rice, and, of course, refreshing drinks like national beers, sodas, and natural juices. They are the perfect place for
