Introduction
If we are looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in a corner of Mexico where nature is the protagonist, Playa Quimixto in Jalisco is, without a doubt, a gem we must discover. It is not just any beach; its charm lies in its unique accessibility and the natural treasure it holds: a beautiful waterfall. For us, visiting Quimixto is synonymous with adventure, relaxation, and a deep connection with the environment.
This Jalisco beach offers us the opportunity to disconnect, enjoy crystal-clear waters, and savor authentic Mexican beach life. It is one of those Mexico beaches that stays in your memory, not only for its beauty but for the complete experience it provides, from the boat ride to exploring its surroundings.
How to Get to Playa Quimixto
Getting to Playa Quimixto is part of the adventure and what makes it so special. There are no roads that take us directly; access is exclusively by sea. Our usual route begins in Puerto Vallarta, where we take a local bus or a taxi to Boca de Tomatlán, a small and picturesque fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta.
Once in Boca de Tomatlán, the next stage is to board a 'panga' or water taxi. These boats take us across the beautiful bay, offering spectacular views of the coast and lush vegetation. The journey lasts approximately 20-30 minutes and is an experience in itself, feeling the sea breeze and anticipating our arrival at the destination. It is essential to agree on the round-trip price with the boatman or, at least, the one-way price, to then coordinate the pickup. For us, arriving at Playa Quimixto by sea is always exciting.
The Sand and Water
When we step onto the sand of Playa Quimixto, we find a fine, golden surface, very pleasant for walking barefoot. It is the kind of sand that invites you to spread out a towel and simply enjoy the sun. The type of ground is predominantly sand, although as with many natural beaches, we can find some areas with small rocks or pebbles near the ends of the cove, which classifies it as mixed in its overall composition.
The waters here are calm, crystal clear, and of a beautiful turquoise hue. The bay protects the beach from large waves, making it perfect for swimming, splashing around, and simply relaxing in the sea. Underwater visibility is often excellent, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life without venturing too far out. For us, the water quality is one of the biggest attractions of this Jalisco beach.
Services and Facilities
Although Playa Quimixto is a more rustic and natural destination, it does not lack the essential services for our comfort. On the beach, we will find several chiringuitos and restaurants with palapa roofs, offering tables and chairs in the shade, many with umbrellas and sun loungers that we can use if we purchase something. These establishments are the heart of beach life, where we can enjoy delicious local dishes and refreshing drinks.
Bathrooms/WCs are usually available at these same restaurants, although we must consider that they are basic facilities in keeping with the environment. It is also possible to find equipment rental for snorkeling or, sometimes, paddleboards. What we will not find here are large resorts, public showers, or parking lots, since, as mentioned, access is only by boat. The authenticity of Quimixto lies precisely in its simplicity and respect for its natural surroundings.
Best Time to Visit
For us, the best time to visit Playa Quimixto and fully enjoy everything it offers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is ideal: sunny days, pleasant temperatures, and lower humidity. The waters are calmer and clearer, perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the chances of rain are minimal, guaranteeing an uninterrupted experience.
The rainy season, from June to October, although it brings incredible lushness to the vegetation and makes the waterfall even more impressive, can be accompanied by tropical storms and hurricanes, especially between August and October. While the rains usually occur in the afternoon and do not prevent enjoying the morning on the beach, we prefer to avoid the months of highest risk to ensure a calmer and sunnier trip. This way, we can make the most of every moment on this beautiful Jalisco beach.
Activities and Sports
Playa Quimixto is a canvas for various activities that connect us with nature and adventure. Of course, the star activity is the visit to the Quimixto waterfall. After arriving at the beach, we can opt for a 20-30 minute walk along a rustic, shaded trail, or take a horse that will take us directly to the waterfall. We usually walk to enjoy the landscape and local flora. Once there, a natural pool awaits where we can take a refreshing dip under the falling water. It is a truly magical experience and one of the main reasons to visit this Mexico beach.
In addition to the waterfall, on the beach we can enjoy:
- Swimming and relaxing: The calm waters are ideal for a safe and pleasant swim.
- Snorkeling: The water clarity allows us to explore coastal marine life.
- Paddleboarding or kayaking: Some of the chiringuitos may offer rental of this equipment for paddling calmly around the bay.
- Horseback riding: Not only to the waterfall but also along the beach or nearby trails, offering a pers
