How to Get to Playa Punta Sur

Getting to this paradise requires a bit of planning, but every step of the journey is worth it. Our adventure begins, logically, by arriving on the island of Cozumel. The most common and convenient way to reach Cozumel is by ferry from Playa del Carmen, on the Yucatan Peninsula. Ferries operate regularly, offering a scenic journey of approximately 45 minutes over the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean. We recommend checking the schedules of the different companies (Ultramar and Winjet) to choose the one that best fits our itinerary.

Once at the San Miguel de Cozumel pier, the island's capital, we have several options to get to Playa Punta Sur. The ecological park is located at the southern end of the island, about 30-40 kilometers from downtown San Miguel. We can choose to rent a car or a scooter, which gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace and stop at other points of interest. The road to Punta Sur is well signposted and is a picturesque highway that runs through the island's lush vegetation.

Alternatively, taxis are a comfortable option, although a bit more expensive. It is important to agree on the price with the driver before starting the trip, as Punta Sur is a more remote area. Some tour operators also offer organized excursions that include transportation and entry to the park, which can be an excellent option if we prefer the convenience of a guided tour. There is an entrance fee for the Parque Ecológico Faro Celarain, which usually includes access to the beaches, the lighthouse, and the lagoons. This payment contributes to the conservation of this impressive natural space, something that, as responsible visitors, we greatly value.

Furthermore, in many of the swimming areas, the waves are gentle and calm, especially in areas protected by reefs or natural formations, making it an ideal Quintana Roo beach for swimming and for families with young children.

The predominant type of ground is sand, which makes entering and exiting the sea easy without worrying about uncomfortable rocks or pebbles. It is this combination of perfect sand and pristine water that elevates Playa Punta Sur to a higher level, solidifying it as one of our favorite beaches in all of Mexico.
