Introduction
Welcome to Playa Puerto Morelos, a magical corner of the Riviera Maya that, for us, represents the essence of authentic Caribbean life. Far from the hustle and bustle of more well-known destinations like Cancún or Playa del Carmen, this jewel of Quintana Roo offers us a more tranquil and genuine experience, where time seems to stand still and nature embraces us with its beauty. It's a destination we've learned to love for its fishing village atmosphere, its unparalleled turquoise blue waters, and, above all, for the warmth of its people.
When we think of beaches in Mexico, images of large resorts and crowds often come to mind. However, Playa Puerto Morelos breaks that stereotype, presenting itself as a sanctuary of peace and adventure. Its main attraction is, without a doubt, its proximity to the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, part of the Great Maya Reef, the second largest in the world. This makes it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, but also an idyllic place to simply relax in the sun.
How to Get to Playa Puerto Morelos
Getting to this paradise in Quintana Roo is simpler than we imagine, and its strategic location makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the region. If we fly into Cancún International Airport (CUN), we are only about 20-25 minutes by car to the south. We can choose from several transportation options:
From Cancún Airport
- Taxi or Private Transportation: This is the most comfortable and fastest option, ideal if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group. There are pre-booked services that wait for us at the airport exit.
- ADO Bus: The ADO bus company offers routes from the airport to the Puerto Morelos terminal, which is at the entrance to the town, across the federal highway. From there, we can take a local taxi to get to the beach or our accommodation.
- Colectivos (Shared Vans): These are shared vans that depart from downtown Cancún or Playa del Carmen. We can take an ADO bus to downtown Cancún and from there take a colectivo towards Playa del Carmen, asking to be dropped off at the Puerto Morelos turnoff. This is the most economical option, but also the one that requires the most transfers.
- Car Rental: For us, this is the best alternative if we want to explore the surroundings and have total freedom of movement. Federal Highway 307 is in excellent condition and the journey is very straightforward.
From Cancún or Playa del Carmen
If we are already staying in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, we can easily get there by ADO bus, colectivo, or rental car. The distance is approximately 35 km from Cancún and 30 km from Playa del Carmen, making Playa Puerto Morelos an excellent option for a day trip or a longer stay.
The Sand and the Water
The experience at Playa Puerto Morelos begins with the feel of its sand, which is, without a doubt, of an immaculate fine whiteness. It's a soft sand, almost like talcum powder, that doesn't get excessively hot under the Caribbean sun, inviting us to walk barefoot along the shore. This type of sand is characteristic of beaches in Quintana Roo and is a pleasure for the feet.
The waters, on the other hand, are of a hypnotic turquoise blue, with a transparency that allows us to see the sandy bottom. Thanks to the protection of the coral reef, which is located a short distance from the coast, the waves are generally gentle and calm, creating a perfect natural pool for swimming, especially for the little ones. It is this calmness that allows us to fully enjoy the immersion in its refreshing depths.
We must mention a natural phenomenon that has affected many beaches in Mexico in recent years: the arrival of sargassum seaweed. Although Playa Puerto Morelos is not immune to it, local authorities and hotels make considerable efforts to keep the beach clean. When sargassum arrives, they work diligently to remove it, ensuring we can continue to enjoy the beauty of the beach. Despite its occasional presence, the clarity and warmth of the water remain a constant attraction that invites us to dive in again and again.
Services and Facilities
Playa Puerto Morelos is an example of how a destination can maintain its rustic charm without sacrificing offering an excellent range of services for its visitors. We have found that the infrastructure, although not as massive as in other places, is more than enough to guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay.
Among the services we can enjoy, we highlight:
- Showers and Toilets/WCs: At various points along the beach and in nearby establishments, we find facilities to rinse off the salt and sand, as well as clean restrooms.
- Parking: There are public parking areas near the beach, although in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot right in front. Often, restaurants and beach bars offer their own parking.
- Beach Bars (Chiringuitos) and Restaurants: Along the shore and on adjacent streets, there are plenty of small restaurants and beach bars serving everything from fresh seafood to typical Mexican dishes. They are perfect for enjoying a meal with sea views or simply having a refreshing drink.
- Lifeguards: Safety is a priority. There are lifeguard towers monitoring the beach, especially in the busier areas, giving us peace of mind when swimming or letting children play near the water.
- Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: Many of the beach establishments offer umbrella and sun lounger rentals, sometimes even for free if we consume at their venue. It's ideal for protecting ourselves from the sun and relaxing comfortably.
- Equipment Rental: Given the proximity of the reef, we easily find
