How to Get to Playa Pavones

Getting to Playa Pavones is, in itself, part of the adventure, and we know this well. This destination is located in one of the most remote and pristine areas of Costa Rica, which contributes to its wild charm but also requires careful planning. From San José, the capital, the journey can be long and challenging, often exceeding 7-8 hours in duration. The most common option is to fly to Golfito or Puerto Jiménez airport, and from there take a taxi or a local bus. Domestic flights are an excellent way to significantly shorten travel time, offering us spectacular views of the Costa Rican geography.

By Road

If we choose the road from San José or Liberia, it is almost essential to rent a 4x4 vehicle, especially during the rainy season (May to November). The last sections of the road to Playa Pavones are gravel and can be in difficult condition, with river crossings and winding stretches. We always recommend the route that passes along the Costanera Sur (Route 34) and then turns south at Palmar Norte, passing through Río Claro and finally taking the turnoff to Pavones. It's a scenic journey, yes, but it demands patience and a good vehicle. Don't despair! The reward at the end of the road is worth every kilometer of effort.

Public Transport

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer not to drive, there are public buses connecting San José with Golfito, and from there, other buses or taxis that reach Pavones. This method is slower, but it allows us to interact more with the local culture and enjoy the scenery without the worry of driving. Another interesting alternative is to take a water taxi or a boat from Golfito or Puerto Jiménez across the Golfo Dulce. This option is not only faster than the road in some sections, but it also gives us the opportunity to spot dolphins and other marine species, turning the journey into a small excursion in itself.
