As beach tourism experts, we are always looking for those special corners that escape the conventional, and Playa Montezuma is undoubtedly one of them. Located at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, this beach is not just a stretch of sand, but a vibrant ecosystem and a community with a unique spirit. It is a destination that attracts travelers seeking adventure, nature, and a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of major tourist centers. Upon arriving in Montezuma, one immediately feels enveloped by its atmosphere. How to Get to Playa Montezuma

Getting to Playa Montezuma is part of the adventure. Given its location on the Nicoya Peninsula, it requires a bit more planning than other destinations, but every step of the journey is worth it. The most common way for most travelers is to fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. From there, we have several options:

By Ferry and Car

This is the most popular and scenic route. From San José, we will drive about two hours to the port of Puntarenas. Here, we will take the ferry that crosses the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera. The ferry ride lasts approximately 70-90 minutes, offering spectacular views of the gulf. Once in Paquera, we will drive about an hour and a half more on roads that wind through the jungle and small towns until we reach Montezuma. It is important to consider that the roads, although improved, can be dirt in some sections, especially after Paquera, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially in the rainy season.

By Domestic Flight

For those who prefer to save time, we can take a domestic flight from San José (SJO) to Tambor Airport (TMU). Several local airlines offer this service, and the flight lasts about 25-30 minutes. From Tambor, Montezuma is only about 45 minutes away by taxi or bus. This option is faster, but also more expensive.

By Public Bus

There is a bus service that connects San José directly with Montezuma, including the ferry crossing. It is the most economical option, although the longest, taking about 6-7 hours in total. For budget travelers or those seeking a more local experience, this is an excellent alternative.

The Sand and Water

The sand at Playa Montezuma is predominantly a light golden to soft brown hue, with a fine texture that feels very pleasant underfoot. Along the beach, we will find areas of pure sand, ideal for sunbathing or taking long walks, interspersed with volcanic rock formations that create small natural pools at low tide. These pools are perfect for a quiet dip, especially with children, or for observing miniature marine life.

The waters of playa Puntarenas in this part of the Pacific are generally warm and of a greenish-blue color. The clarity can vary depending on currents and the time of year, but they are often crystal clear, especially on sunny days. However, it is important to exercise caution, as currents can be strong in some areas, especially offshore. It is always advisable to swim near the shore or in calmer areas and, if there are lifeguards, to follow their instructions. The water temperature is ideal for bathing year-round, inviting us to enjoy a refreshing dip after exploring the surroundings.

Services and Facilities

Despite its relaxed and natural atmosphere, Montezuma offers a good range of services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. Being a small town, most services are within walking distance of the main beach:

• Parking: There are several parking areas available in the town center, some free and others paid, managed by locals. It is relatively easy to find a spot to park our vehicle.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the main street bordering the beach, we will find an excellent selection of restaurants and small chiringuitos. They offer everything from typical Costa Rican food ('sodas') to international, vegetarian, and vegan options, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. Many have tables with sea views.
• Lifeguards: During the high season and on weekends, there is usually a lifeguard presence on the main beach, ensuring the safety of swimmers. However, in more remote areas or during the low season, supervision may be limited, so personal caution is essential.
• Equipment Rental: We can rent surfboards, snorkeling gear, kayaks, and, in some places, bicycles or ATVs to explore the area. There are several shops and tour operators that offer these services.
• Bathrooms/WC and Showers: Although there are no public showers directly on the sand, many of the restaurants and cafes near the beach have bathrooms and some offer showers for customers. It is common for nearby accommodations to also have these facilities.
