How to Get to Playa Manuel Antonio

Getting to Playa Manuel Antonio is part of the adventure. The beach is located in Manuel Antonio National Park, a short distance from the city of Quepos, in the province of Puntarenas. From San José, the capital, we have several options. The most common is to drive, which takes about 2.5 to 3 hours via Route 27 and then the Costanera Sur (Route 34). The road is paved and in good condition, offering beautiful scenery as we approach the coast. It's advisable to rent a 4x4 vehicle if we plan to explore secondary roads, although it's not strictly necessary to reach the park.

Another popular option is to take a direct bus from the Terminal 7-10 in San José to Quepos. These buses are comfortable and relatively inexpensive, with several departures per day. Once in Quepos, we can take a local bus or a taxi to the entrance of Manuel Antonio National Park, which is about 7 kilometers away. There are also shared or private shuttle services that pick us up directly at our hotel in San José or at the airport and take us to our accommodation in Manuel Antonio or Quepos, a comfortable option if we prefer not to drive.

For those of us looking for a faster option, there are domestic flights from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to Quepos airstrip (XQP). The flights last approximately 25 minutes and offer us spectacular views of the coast. From Quepos airport, a taxi takes us to the park entrance or our hotel. It's important to remember that Manuel Antonio National Park has limited hours and capacity, so it's recommended to purchase tickets in advance online to ensure our access, especially during the high season. Parking is located outside the main park entrance, and from there we walk a short distance or take a local shuttle to the main access.

The Sand and Water
