From the moment we set foot on the sand of Playa Maguey, we knew we had arrived at a special corner of the Oaxaca beaches. Located within the majestic complex of the Bays of Huatulco, in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, this cove enveloped us with its atmosphere of peace and its incomparable natural beauty. It is not the largest or the busiest beach in the region, and precisely in that intimacy lies much of its charm. For us, Playa Maguey represents the essence of what we look for in a beach vacation: tranquility, crystal-clear waters, and the opportunity to connect with nature in an authentic way.

This hidden gem is a true paradise for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in a relaxing environment. Its waters, of an inviting turquoise blue hue, are exceptionally calm, protected by the rock formations that flank it. This makes it an ideal destination for families with young children, couples looking for a romantic retreat, and any traveler yearning for the serenity of the Mexican Pacific. We love how the tropical vegetation embraces the beach, creating a vibrant contrast with the blue of the sea and the gold of the sand. It is, without a doubt, one of the Mexico beaches that has captivated us the most with its simplicity and natural magnetism.

How to Get to Playa Maguey

Getting to Playa Maguey is part of the adventure and, fortunately, there are several options to suit different preferences. We explored the main ones and can say that all offer their own charm for accessing this spectacular Oaxaca beach.

By Car or Taxi

If we prefer comfort and flexibility, arriving by car or taxi from La Crucecita or Santa Cruz Huatulco is an excellent option. There is a paved road that takes us directly to a parking area, although this can be a bit rudimentary and have a symbolic cost, often managed by the same locals who offer services on the beach. The journey is relatively short, about 15-20 minutes from La Crucecita, and allows us to enjoy the rural landscapes of Oaxaca before reaching the coast. It is important to consider that, once we leave the car, there is a small downhill walk to access the sand directly. It's not a difficult path, but it is something to consider if we are traveling with people with reduced mobility or a lot of luggage.

By Boat Tour

For many, the most popular and picturesque way to visit Playa Maguey is through a boat tour. These tours usually depart from the Santa Cruz Huatulco pier and travel through several of the famous Bays of Huatulco. Playa Maguey is almost always a mandatory stop due to its ideal conditions for snorkeling and food. Sailing through the Pacific waters, seeing the coast from a different perspective, is an experience we highly recommend. The boat drops us off directly on the shore or very close to it, which facilitates access and immediately immerses us in the beach atmosphere. It is an excellent option if we want to combine the visit to Maguey with other nearby beaches and coves, such as La Entrega or Cacaluta.

Public Transportation

Although there is no direct public transportation route to Playa Maguey, we can take a colectivo or bus to La Crucecita and from there a taxi to take us the rest of the way. This is a more economical option, but requires a bit more planning and transfers. For us, the comfort of a taxi or the experience of a boat tour outweighed the small cost difference, especially if our time is limited and we want to maximize relaxation.

The Sand and the Water

The sensory experience at Playa Maguey begins with its sand and waters, elements that, for us, elevate it to one of the most desirable Mexico beaches. The sand here is of exceptional quality: fine, golden, and soft to the touch, it stretches along the cove, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel its warmth under our feet. It is not an excessively large beach, which contributes to its intimate and welcoming atmosphere, but it is wide enough to find a good spot to relax in the sun or under the shade of a palapa. At the ends of the beach, the sand mixes with some rock formations, which are precisely what give life to its fascinating underwater world.

But it is the water of Playa Maguey that truly takes our breath away. Of an intense turquoise color and astonishing transparency, it is so clear that we can see the seabed several meters deep without needing to submerge. These waters are incredibly calm, almost like a natural pool, thanks to the protection provided by the rock formations that shield it from the stronger ocean currents. The water temperature is always pleasant, warm and refreshing at the same time, perfect for a long swim or simply floating without worries. This combination of soft sand and serene waters makes Playa Maguey an idyllic place for rest and aquatic enjoyment.

Snorkeling and Marine Life

The calm and clarity of the waters of Playa Maguey make it a paradise for snorkeling lovers. We always bring our own equipment, or we can easily rent it on the beach, to explore the vibrant underwater ecosystem. Near the rocks, marine life is abundant and diverse. We have had the opportunity to observe a great variety of brightly colored tropical fish, sea urchins, small coral formations, and even the occasional sea turtle if we are lucky.
