How to Get to Playa Hermosa

Getting to Playa Hermosa is relatively straightforward, especially if you're coming from the capital, San José. The most common and comfortable way is by car, which will also give you the freedom to explore the surroundings at your own pace. From San José, take Route 27 (Caldera Highway) towards the Pacific. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Once you reach Orotina, follow the signs to Jacó and, just before arriving in that city, you'll see signs directing you south to Playa Hermosa.

For those who prefer not to drive, there are several public and private transportation options. You can opt for direct buses from San José to Jacó, and from there take a taxi or a local bus that will drop you off directly at Playa Hermosa. There are also shared and private shuttle services that offer door-to-door transfers, an excellent option if you're traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. The nearest international airport is Juan Santamaría (SJO) in Alajuela, from where you can rent a car or arrange ground transportation. The ease of access is one of the great advantages of this Playa Hermosa beach.

The Sand and Water

Although Playa Hermosa retains a more natural and less urbanized atmosphere than its neighbor Jacó, it doesn't lack the essential services to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. Along the coastal road that borders the beach, we'll find a good variety of options. We have parking available, often near establishments or in designated areas, which facilitates access if you come by car. There are several chiringuitos and restaurants offering everything from delicious local Costa Rican food, like the tasty 'casados', to international options, perfect for recharging after a surf session or a day in the sun.

For surfing enthusiasts, there are several equipment rental shops where you can get boards and lessons if you're a beginner. Safety is a priority, so the beach has lifeguard services, especially in the busier areas and at surf points. Some establishments offer bathrooms/WCs and, on occasion, umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, allowing us to enjoy the sun with greater comfort. While it's not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, the services we find are sufficient and designed for the type of traveler seeking an authentic experience focused on nature and surfing. It's one of the Costa Rica beaches that manages to maintain its rustic charm without sacrificing basic comfort.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa Hermosa will largely depend on our priorities, as Costa Rica has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season (also known as the green season).

Dry Season (December to April)

• Weather: Sunny days and clear skies are the norm. Temperatures are warm and pleasant, ideal for enjoying the beach, sunbathing, and doing outdoor activities.
• Waves: Although the waves are consistent year-round, during the dry season they are usually a bit smaller and more manageable, which can be attractive for intermediate-level surfers.
