How to Get to Playa Guiones

Getting to Playa Guiones, in the Nosara region, requires a bit of planning, but the reward is well worth the effort. We always consider that part of the adventure begins on the journey. The main options for accessing this paradise in Guanacaste are several, depending on your starting point and your preference for comfort or adventure.

From International Airports

Primarily, travelers arrive in Costa Rica through two international airports:

• Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José: It is the country's largest airport. From here, the road trip to Playa Guiones can take between 4 and 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. It is a longer route and often involves traversing mountainous landscapes and less developed road sections.
• Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste: This is, by far, the most convenient airport for reaching Playa Guiones. The road trip from Liberia is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Although the roads have improved significantly in recent years, the last stretch towards Nosara can still be dirt or gravel, especially during the rainy season. We always recommend a 4x4 vehicle, or at least an SUV with good ground clearance, for greater peace of mind and to explore the surroundings with ease.

Transportation Options

Once at either airport, you have several alternatives to get to Playa Guiones:

• Car rental: It is our preferred option, as it gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace. As mentioned, a 4x4 is ideal. Be sure to book in advance, especially during high season.
• Private or shared shuttles: There are numerous companies offering direct transportation services from both airports to Nosara. Shared shuttles are a more economical option, while private ones offer greater schedule flexibility and stops. It's an excellent way to relax and enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving.
• Domestic flights: For those seeking speed and a different experience, there are domestic flights operated by airlines like Sansa or Nature Air from San José (SJO) to the small Nosara airstrip. The flight lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and offers spectacular views of the coast. From the Nosara airstrip, a taxi or pre-arranged transport will take you to Playa Guiones in a few minutes.
• Public bus: It is the most economical option, but also the longest and most complex. It involves several connections, usually passing through Nicoya or Santa Cruz. Although it is an authentic way to travel, it can be exhausting with luggage and is not the most recommended for first-time travelers to the area.
