How to Get to Playa Grande

Getting to Playa Grande is part of the adventure and, fortunately, there are several routes to access this Caribbean Eden. If you are coming from Santo Domingo, the capital, the car journey will take approximately three and a half to four hours, depending on traffic and stops. The most common route is to take the Autopista del Nordeste (Juan Pablo II Highway) towards Samaná, and then continue along the coastal road 5 heading west, passing through Nagua and Cabrera, until reaching Río San Juan. Playa Grande is located a few kilometers west of Río San Juan.

If your starting point is Puerto Plata, the journey is shorter, around an hour and a half to two hours, following coastal road 5 eastward. The road is generally in good condition, although we always recommend driving with caution and enjoying the rural landscape that accompanies the route. From Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata, you can rent a car or take a taxi. For those who prefer a more relaxed option, there are private transportation services that can be booked in advance. Once near the beach, you will see clear signs to the main access and parking areas.

The Sand and the Water

Playa Grande is, as its name indicates, grande in every sense, and its sand is one of its most distinctive and attractive features. We were amazed by the golden hue of the sand, a perfect mix of fineness and texture that feels incredibly pleasant to the touch. It is ideal for long barefoot walks, for building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply for lying down and feeling the warmth of the Caribbean sun. The beach's expanse ensures that, even on busier days, you can always find a private and quiet spot for yourselves.

As for the water, the turquoise and deep blue hues of the Atlantic are simply hypnotic. The temperature is warm and welcoming year-round, inviting a refreshing swim. The surf at Playa Grande is generally moderate, making it attractive for a variety of bathers. In some sections, especially towards the west, the waves are perfect for surfing and bodyboarding, attracting enthusiasts of these sports. However, there are also more sheltered areas where the sea is calmer, ideal for swimming calmly and for children to enjoy safely under supervision. The clarity of the water is remarkable, allowing you to see the sandy bottom in the shallower areas, which adds a special charm to every dip.

Services and Facilities

Although Playa Grande retains a natural and wild charm, it also offers a range of services and facilities that ensure a comfortable and pleasant visit. We appreciate the balance between pristine nature and essential comforts. The parking is spacious and generally easy to find, which is a great advantage, especially if you are traveling by car. There are designated areas where you can leave your vehicle with some peace of mind, often with the presence of local caretakers.

One of the beach's biggest attractions are its famous chiringuitos and local restaurants. These establishments, often rustic and with authentic charm, offer a delicious variety of fresh seafood, grilled fish, and other Dominican specialties. It is a pleasure to sit in the shade of a palapa, with your feet in the sand, enjoying a cold coconut or a local beer while gazing at the sea. Many of these chiringuitos also have umbrellas and sun loungers for rent, allowing you to relax in the shade without having to carry your own equipment. Furthermore, they usually have basic bathrooms/WCs for customer use.

Regarding safety, we noticed the presence of lifeguards in the busier areas, especially during the high season, which provides an extra layer of peace of mind for bathers. Although the beach does not have full accessibility infrastructure for people with reduced mobility (such as ramps to the sand), the general access from the parking lot to the beach is relatively straightforward.
