How to Get to Playa Ensenada

To get to Playa Ensenada, we head west from the city of Puerto Plata, following the road that runs along the coast. The beach is located near the municipality of Luperón, making it accessible both for those staying in large resorts and for adventurers exploring the region independently. From Puerto Plata, the journey by car or taxi can take approximately an hour and a half, depending on traffic and road conditions.

If we depart from the center of Puerto Plata, we will take highway 5 heading west. We will pass through Imbert and, as we approach Luperón, we will find the signs that will guide us towards the coast. It is a picturesque route, allowing us to appreciate the rural landscapes and the Dominican coast. Access to the beach is relatively simple, although the last few kilometers may be on a slightly less paved road, but perfectly passable.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: This is the most comfortable option if we want flexibility to explore the surroundings. There is ample parking, although it is often informal and managed by the locals themselves in exchange for a small tip.
• Taxi or Private Transport: Ideal if we prefer not to drive. We can negotiate a round-trip fare with the driver, who might even wait for us during the day.
• Guaguas (Local Buses): For the more adventurous and budget-conscious, 'guaguas' are an economical option. We would need to take a guagua to Luperón and then a motoconcho (motorcycle taxi) to the beach. It's a more immersive experience, but requires more time and patience.

What captivates us most about Playa Ensenada is, without a doubt, the combination of its fine sand and the water. Here, we can delight in fresh fish and seafood caught the same day, prepared on the spot. From the classic fried fish with tostones to grilled lobster, the culinary offering is simple but delicious and at very reasonable prices. Each 'comedor' has its own charm, and the experience of eating with our feet in the sand, listening to the gentle murmur of the sea, is unforgettable.

Basic Amenities

• Umbrellas and Sunbeds: Most chiringuitos offer umbrella and sunbed rentals. Sometimes, use is free if we consume at their establishment, which is an excellent option.
• Parking: As mentioned, parking is generally informal. Local people will indicate where to park and look after our vehicle in exchange for a tip. It's a system that works well and contributes to the local economy.
• Bathrooms and Showers: Public bathroom and shower facilities are not common on this beach. However, restaurants and chiringuitos usually have bathrooms for their customers, which, although basic, serve their purpose. Don't expect showers with hot water or luxurious changing rooms, but what's necessary to refresh ourselves.
