How to Get to Playa El Cuyo

Getting to Playa El Cuyo is part of the adventure and charm of this destination. Its remote location is precisely what has helped preserve its character. Although it doesn't have its own airport, there are several options to access this Yucatecan paradise.

From Merida

If you arrive in Merida (Merida International Airport, MID), the journey to Playa El Cuyo takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by car. We recommend renting a vehicle to have the freedom to explore the area at your own pace. The most common route is to take the highway east, passing through Tizimin, a larger city where you can stop to refuel or buy supplies. From Tizimin, the road to El Cuyo is a local highway that crosses rural landscapes and small towns, offering a glimpse into the authentic life of Yucatan.

From Cancun or the Riviera Maya

For those arriving at Cancun International Airport (CUN), the journey is a bit shorter, around 2.5 to 3 hours. From Cancun, you should take federal highway 180D west, towards Valladolid, and then turn north at Kantunilkin. As with from Merida, renting a car is the most comfortable option. It's also possible to take an ADO bus from Cancun to Tizimin and, from there, a colectivo (shared van) or a taxi to Playa El Cuyo. However, colectivos usually have limited schedules and may require patience.

Travel Tips

• Rental Car: Without a doubt, the best option. It will give you flexibility to visit the surroundings and not depend on public transport schedules. Make sure the car has good air conditioning, especially in the hot months.
• Gasoline: Fill up the tank in Tizimin or Kantunilkin, as options in El Cuyo are limited or non-existent.
• GPS/Maps: Although the route is simple, it's useful to have a GPS or downloaded maps, as cell phone signal can be intermittent in some areas.
• Night Driving: It's preferable to arrive during the day, as some rural roads are not well lit and animals may cross.

You won't find sharp rocks or uncomfortable shells in the main swimming areas, making it ideal for long walks and for children to play without worries.

The most notable thing is their tranquility and shallow depth near the shore, making it an exceptionally safe place to swim, especially for families with young children. The waves are generally gentle, protected in part by the geography of the coast and the proximity of the Ria Lagartos.
