For us, Playa El Cortecito is not just a place to sunbathe; it's a hub of activity where local culture blends with international tourism. Here, the sound of the waves is complemented by the cheerful chatter of vendors, music from the chiringuitos, and the bustle of families enjoying a perfect day. It is one of the beaches in La Altagracia that truly allows us to immerse ourselves in the essence of the Caribbean, offering both relaxation and adventure in the same space.
Our trip to Playa El Cortecito has always been a mix of exceeded expectations and charming discoveries. From the moment we set foot on its soft sand, we know we are in a special place, a corner of the Dominican Republic that invites us to disconnect, celebrate, and create unforgettable memories. It is, without a doubt, one of the most accessible and complete beaches in the Dominican Republic we have had the pleasure of exploring.
How to Get to Playa El Cortecito
Getting to Playa El Cortecito is relatively easy, especially if we are already in the Punta Cana area. The beach is conveniently located in Bávaro, one of the most developed tourist areas in the province of La Altagracia.
From Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the main entry point for most visitors. From there, we have several options to get to Playa El Cortecito:
- Taxi or Private Transfer: This is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and fastest option. There are plenty of taxis available at the airport, and many hotels offer pre-booked transfer services. The journey usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and the exact location of our accommodation in relation to the beach.
- Car Rental: If we prefer the freedom to explore at our own pace, renting a car is an excellent alternative. We will find several rental agencies at the airport. The main road is the Coral Highway, and the signs to Bávaro and Playa El Cortecito are quite clear. Parking in the beach area is usually easy to find, although it may have a symbolic cost in some areas.
- Guaguas (Local Public Transport): For adventurers and those on a tighter budget, 'guaguas' are an option. They are local minibuses that run along the main routes. However, we may have to make transfers and the journey will be longer and less direct than with a taxi or rental car.
From Santo Domingo
If our starting point is the capital, Santo Domingo, the trip to Playa El Cortecito is a bit longer, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by car. The Coral Highway connects Santo Domingo directly with the eastern region, including Punta Cana and Bávaro. We can opt for a long-distance bus (like Expreso Bávaro), rent a car, or hire a private transfer service.
Once in the Bávaro area, Playa El Cortecito is easily identifiable. Many of the resorts and the town of El Cortecito itself are within walking distance, making access easy on foot if we are staying nearby. It is, without a doubt, one of the most accessible beaches in the Dominican Republic for tourists.
The Sand and the Water
The experience at Playa El Cortecito begins, for us, with the sight and feel of its sand. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most delightful sands we have found on the beaches of the Dominican Republic. Of a dazzling pearly white, it is incredibly fine and soft to the touch, almost like flour, making it perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying on it and feeling the warmth of the Caribbean sun. Its composition, mainly of ground coral, gives it that characteristic tone that contrasts wonderfully with the blue of the sea.
The type of ground on the beach is, of course, predominantly sand, which guarantees a smooth and safe entry into the water, without annoying stones or rocks that could hinder the way. This is a very important point, especially if we are traveling with children or if we are simply looking for maximum comfort for our feet.
But if the sand is a delight, the water is the true gem of Playa El Cortecito. We are talking about calm waters, of a vibrant turquoise hue that blends with the deep blue of the horizon. The transparency is astonishing, allowing us to see the sandy bottom and, at times, small fish venturing near the shore. These waters are incredibly warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below 26-28°C, making them perfect for a relaxing swim at any time of the day.
The calmness of the waters is largely due to the natural protection offered by a reef barrier, which acts as a shield against the larger Atlantic waves. This creates a gigantic natural pool, ideal for swimming, floating, and enjoying without worries. It is for this reason that we consider Playa El Cortecito to be an exceptional place for families and for those seeking a serene environment for swimming. The combination of fine sand and calm waters makes it one of the most attractive and safest beaches in La Altagracia for all audiences.
