How to Get to Playa de Voulisma (Istron)

We generally recommend renting a car as the most flexible and comfortable option for exploring Crete, and for Voulisma it is no exception. From Agios Nikolaos, simply take the coastal road towards Ierapetra, and the turnoff to the beach is clearly signposted. The drive is picturesque, offering spectacular views of Mirabello Bay.

By Car

If you are coming from Heraklion (the capital and where the main airport is located), the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, following the E75 highway east. The signage for Istron and then for the beach is clear. There is a large free parking area right above the beach, which is a great advantage, although in high season it can fill up quickly. We advise arriving early to secure a good spot.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular buses from the KTEL company connecting Agios Nikolaos with Istron and other nearby villages. The bus stop closest to Playa de Voulisma (Istron) is a short walk away, making it a viable option for those who do not wish to rent a vehicle. It is important to check the schedules in advance, as they can vary depending on the season.

The Sand and Water

What sets Playa de Voulisma apart from many others in Crete is, without a doubt, the exceptional quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. We have marveled at the fine, golden sand that covers the entire expanse of the beach, a soft and pleasant-to-the-touch sand that invites you to walk barefoot and relax in the sun. This clarity is partly due to its location in a protected bay and the sea currents. The water temperature is generally mild, especially from late spring to early autumn, making it extremely inviting for a refreshing swim. Furthermore, the entry into the sea is gradual and shallow, making it an exceptionally safe place to swim, even for the little ones or for those who are not very comfortable in deep water. The water quality is so high that the beach has been repeatedly awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies its environmental excellence and the quality of its services.

Additionally, on the beach and in its immediate surroundings, there are several chiringuitos and small tavernas. These establishments are perfect for enjoying a refreshing drink, a traditional Greek coffee, or a delicious snack. They offer everything from light snacks to more elaborate dishes, allowing us to have lunch with sea views without having to leave the beach.

For our comfort, the beach has showers to rinse off sand and salt after a swim, as well as clean and well-maintained bathrooms/WCs.
