How to get to Playa de Vlyhadia

Getting to Playa de Vlyhadia is a simple and pleasant part of the adventure in Kalymnos. The island, although mountainous, has a good road network connecting its main points of interest. From Pothia, the capital and main port of Kalymnos, the journey to Vlyhadia is approximately 10-12 kilometers and usually takes about 20-25 minutes by car or scooter, depending on traffic and the specific route we take.

Transport options

• Rental car or scooter: For us, this is the most recommended option. It gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace, stopping at viewpoints or other picturesque villages on the way to the beach. In Pothia and in tourist areas like Myrties or Massouri, we will find numerous rental agencies. Prices are usually reasonable, especially if we book in advance.
• Taxi: Another comfortable alternative is to take a taxi from Pothia or from our accommodation. Local taxi drivers know the island well and will take us directly to Vlyhadia. It's a practical option if we don't want to worry about parking or navigation, although it can be a bit more expensive, especially for round trips.
• Public bus: Although Kalymnos has a bus service, routes and frequencies to more remote places like Vlyhadia can be limited. In the adjacent cove, the composition is similar, perhaps with a higher proportion of pebbles. For us, this characteristic is a plus, as it avoids the annoying sand that sticks to everything and makes cleaning up easier at the end of the day. The pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are pleasant to the touch and are usually not uncomfortable for walking barefoot, although for the more sensitive, water shoes can be useful.

Crystal clear and calm waters

But if there's something that truly dazzles us in Vlyhadia, it's the clarity of its waters. They are a vibrant turquoise blue, so transparent that we can see the seabed with astonishing ease, even at several meters depth. This transparency is ideal for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life without needing to venture too far. Furthermore, the coves are well protected from the prevailing winds, which means the sea is usually calm, with barely any waves.
