When we talk about Playa de Velipojë, we refer to an extensive stretch of coastline that extends for kilometers, offering plenty of space for everyone. Its main characteristic is the combination of soft, dark sand with incredibly shallow waters, making it the perfect playground for the little ones. How to Get to Playa de Velipojë

Getting to Playa de Velipojë is relatively easy, especially if traveling from the city of Shkodra, which acts as the main gateway to the region. We always recommend a car as the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring the area, as it will allow us to move at our own pace and discover nearby attractions.

By Car

If we are coming from Tirana, the capital of Albania, the drive takes approximately two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic. The route will take us along well-maintained roads to Shkodra and, from there, a turnoff towards the coast will lead us directly to Velipojë in an additional 30-40 minutes. The signage is clear and the scenery during the journey, especially as we approach the coast and the Buna River, is quite picturesque. From Montenegro, the proximity to the border makes it an easy option for day trips or longer stays, especially from cities like Ulcinj.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer public transport, there are buses and minivans (known as 'furgon' in Albania) that connect Shkodra with Velipojë quite regularly during the high season. These minivans are an economical and authentic way to travel, although perhaps less comfortable if we have a lot of luggage. Schedules are usually flexible and adjust to demand, being more frequent in the morning and late afternoon. However, for maximum comfort and freedom, renting a car remains our top recommendation to fully enjoy the Shkodra beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and praised aspects of Playa de Velipojë is, without a doubt, its sand and water. Here you won't find Caribbean white sand, but rather a fine sand of a darker, almost grayish tone, which has the particularity of heating up less under the intense summer sun, a considerable advantage for walking barefoot. It's a soft and pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for building castles or simply relaxing in the sun.

As for the water, Playa de Velipojë is characterized by being extremely shallow for many meters from the shore. This means children can play and splash in complete safety, and adults can enjoy a peaceful swim without worrying about strong currents or sudden depths. The Adriatic waters in this area are generally warm during the summer months, with a very pleasant temperature for swimming. Although the visibility is not that of a coral reef, the waters are usually clean and clear, inviting you to spend hours submerged. It's the type of beach where you can walk and walk out to sea without the water rising above your waist, making every swim a relaxing and safe experience.

In most of the developed beach area, we will find an abundance of sun umbrellas and sunbeds available for rent, often managed by the nearby 'chiringuitos' or hotels. This ensures a comfortable place to rest and protect ourselves from the sun. There are also public showers and bathrooms/WCs at various points along the promenade and in establishments, which is fundamental for hygiene and comfort.

Gastronomy and Leisure

The gastronomic offer is varied and abundant. Numerous 'chiringuitos' and restaurants line the beach, offering everything from fast food and snacks to fresh fish dishes and Albanian specialties. It's the perfect place to enjoy a meal with sea views or have a coffee. In the evenings, many of these places come to life, offering a pleasant social atmosphere.

Safety and Accessibility

During the high season, the presence of lifeguards is a relief, ensuring greater safety for all swimmers, especially the little ones. As for parking, although it's not always a formal and organized parking lot, we will always find options to leave the car, often in designated areas or near accommodations and restaurants, sometimes for a small fee.
