How to get to Playa de Valdearenas

Getting to Playa de Valdearenas is relatively easy, and transport options are varied, although the car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable for most visitors. We always recommend planning the route in advance, especially if visiting during high season, when the influx of people can be greater.

By car

The most direct way to access Playa de Valdearenas is by car. From Santander, the capital of Cantabria, the journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes. We must take the A-67 motorway towards Torrelavega and then the exit towards CA-231 (Liencres/Mogro). Once in Liencres, the signs to the beach are clear. We will find a large and free parking area, although in the summer months it can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early. The GPS coordinates for the parking are approximately 43.468, -3.961. It's important to remember that access to certain areas of the Liencres Dunes Natural Park may be restricted to vehicular traffic, so we must always respect the signage.

By public transport

Although public transport is not as direct as the car, options exist. There are bus lines connecting Santander with Liencres. Once in Liencres, the beach is within walking distance (about 20-30 minutes, depending on the starting point in the town) or by taxi. However, for the convenience of carrying beach gear or if traveling with children, the car remains our main recommendation.

The sand and the water

Playa de Valdearenas is famous for its expanse and the quality of its sand, which is one of its greatest attractions. We have visited many Cantabrian beaches, and we can say that Valdearenas has a particular charm in this aspect.

The sand: a golden mantle

The sand of Valdearenas is fine and of an intense golden color, very pleasant to the touch. It stretches for almost 3 kilometers, forming a vast sandy beach that invites long walks, building sandcastles, or simply lying down and enjoying the sun. The most characteristic feature of this beach is its impressive dune system, which is part of the Liencres Dunes Natural Park. These dunes, shaped by wind and sea, are a fragile ecosystem of great ecological value. We always insist on the importance of respecting these formations, using the designated walkways and avoiding stepping on the vegetation to preserve their beauty and natural function.

The water: the essence of the Cantabrian Sea

The waters of Playa de Valdearenas are those of the impetuous Cantabrian Sea: clean, fresh, and of an intense blue-green color. The water quality is usually excellent, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction on multiple occasions. However, it's important to consider that, being a beach open to the ocean, the waves can be considerable, especially on days with a groundswell. This makes it a paradise for surfers and lovers of water sports, but demands caution from bathers, especially those not accustomed to the currents. We must always heed the instructions of the lifeguards and the flags signaling the state of the sea. The depth increases progressively, making it suitable for swimming, but always with respect for the force of the ocean.

Services and facilities

Although Playa de Valdearenas retains a marked natural and wild character, it has a series of services that make the stay of its visitors more comfortable. We highly value that this balance between nature and essential amenities is maintained.

Basic and safety services

During the bathing season (generally from June to September), the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind when enjoying the sea. Furthermore, we will find showers to refresh ourselves and wash off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as public bathrooms/WCs, an indispensable service sometimes missed on more remote beaches. The presence of the Blue Flag is a clear indicator of the quality of its services and the cleanliness of its waters and sands.
