How to Get to Playa de Šunj

Getting to Playa de Šunj is part of the adventure and, at the same time, an experience in itself that enhances its charm. Since the beach is located on the island of Lopud, one of the beautiful Elaphiti Islands, the first step is always a boat trip. The most common and comfortable way to reach Lopud is by taking a ferry from the port of Gruž in Dubrovnik. We recommend checking the schedules of the Jadrolinija company, which offers several daily departures, especially during the high season. The ferry ride is a delight, offering panoramic views of the Dalmatian coast and the surrounding islands, a perfect anticipation of what awaits us.

Once the ferry docks at the port of Lopud, on the northwest side of the island, we have several options to reach Playa de Šunj, which is located on the south side. The island of Lopud is famous for being a car-free island, which greatly contributes to its tranquil and pristine atmosphere. This means the transportation options are more picturesque and eco-friendly:

Walking Across the Island

For nature and exercise lovers, a walk across the island is a wonderful option. There is a well-marked trail that crosses the island, leading from the port of Lopud to Playa de Šunj. The walk takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the pace, and is a fantastic opportunity to admire the lush Mediterranean vegetation, olive groves, and small vineyards that dot the landscape. We always enjoy this walk, as it allows us to appreciate the inner beauty of the island before reaching the beach. It's a way to connect with the surroundings and prepare for the relaxation that awaits.

By Golf Cart

If we prefer a faster and more comfortable option, especially if we are loaded with towels, umbrellas, and toys for the children, we can opt to take one of the small electric golf carts that serve as taxis on the island. These carts wait at the port upon the ferry's arrival and will take us directly to Playa de Šunj for a small fee. It's a fun and efficient way to cross the island, and it's the option many choose, particularly on hotter days or when traveling with elderly people or young children. For us, it's an excellent solution that combines comfort with the charm of the car-free island.

Regardless of how we choose to arrive, the experience of approaching Playa de Šunj is always memorable. The fact that it requires a small effort or a picturesque journey by boat and cart adds a touch of exclusivity and adventure, making the reward of its crystal-clear waters and fine sand even sweeter. It's a journey that, in itself, becomes part of the holiday experience on the Dubrovnik-Neretva beaches.

Playa de Šunj is, certainly, a paradise for the senses, and much of its charm lies in the unique characteristics of its sand and water. When we think of Croatian beaches, images of rocky coves or pebble beaches often come to mind, but Šunj is a glorious exception that stands out for its extensive stretch of sand.

The Sand: A Fine, Golden Mantle

The sand of Playa de Šunj is, for us, one of its greatest attractions. It is a fine type of sand, of a soft golden color that becomes shiny under the Adriatic sun. Unlike many other beaches in the region, here we won't find pebbles or sharp rocks, making walking barefoot a true pleasure. It's soft to the touch, perfect for building sandcastles —an activity that children adore and in which, we confess, we also participate from time to time— and for spreading out a towel without worrying about discomfort. The texture of the sand is so pleasant that it simply invites relaxation.
