From the moment we set foot on Playa de Tourán, in the charming municipality of Valdés, Asturias, we knew we had found a true treasure of the Cantabrian Sea. How to Get to Playa de Tourán

Getting to Playa de Tourán is relatively straightforward, although as with many of the hidden gems of the Asturian coast, it requires a small detour from the main routes. We always recommend planning the trip in advance to fully enjoy the journey.

From the Main Cities of Asturias

If we are coming from Oviedo or Gijón, the most direct route is to take the Autovía del Cantábrico (A-8) towards Galicia. We should take exit 451 towards Luarca/Valdés. Once in Luarca, we follow the signs towards the western coast of the municipality. The beach is a short distance from the center of Luarca, to the west. There is signage that will guide us along local roads, sometimes a bit narrow but well-paved, to the beach access.

Parking

One of the advantages of Playa de Tourán is that it has a nearby parking lot, which is highly valued, especially in the summer months. Although it's not huge, there is usually enough space, and its proximity to the sand makes loading and unloading beach gear much easier, something families with children will greatly appreciate. However, as with all popular Asturias beaches, in the middle of August or on very sunny weekends, we might have to arrive early to secure our spot. From the parking lot, a short path leads us directly to the sand, gradually revealing the spectacular view of the beach.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about Playa de Tourán, it's impossible not to highlight the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. They are certainly two of its greatest attractions and the reasons why we return again and again.

A Blanket of Fine Golden Sand

The beach stretches for about 500 meters, offering us ample space to lie down, walk, or play. Its type of sand is predominantly fine and of a beautiful golden, almost ochre color, which shines under the Asturian sun. It's soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, and, even better, ideal for the little ones to build their sandcastles with ease. The type of ground is homogeneous, pure sand, without large areas of rocks or pebbles on the shore, making it very comfortable and safe for everyone.

Calm and Crystal-Clear Waters

The waters of Playa de Tourán are, in general, surprisingly calm for the Cantabrian Sea. This is due to the configuration of the bay, which protects it from the strongest currents. They are crystal-clear waters, with shades ranging from emerald green to turquoise blue, inviting a refreshing swim. The water quality is excellent, as reflected by the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that gives us the peace of mind of knowing we are in a well-maintained and safe environment. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, without sudden drops, making it especially safe for children's bathing and for those who are not expert swimmers. We always enjoy a good dip here, knowing we are in one of the cleanest corners of the Asturias beaches.

Playa de Tourán is a beach that, despite its natural ambiance, does not lack the essential services that make our beach day much more comfortable and pleasant. We greatly value finding this balance between nature and functionality.

Essential Amenities

During the high season, the beach has lifeguard services, which provides us with great peace of mind, especially when we go with children. Knowing there are professionals watching and ready to act is an undeniable plus. Furthermore, we have showers to rinse off the sand and salt before heading home, a basic but much-appreciated service. The nearby parking, as we already mentioned, greatly facilitates access, avoiding long walks with all the beach gear.

Options for Eating and Relaxing

One of the great attractions of Playa de Tourán are its chiringuitos (beach bars), which usually open in the summer season. They are the perfect place to have a drink, an ice cream, or even enjoy a light meal with sea views. We love the feeling of being able to extend the beach day without having to go too far. Additionally, sometimes we can find sunbed and umbrella rental services, which allows us to travel lighter and enjoy maximum comfort under the Asturian sun.
