Located in the municipality of Pájara, this beach is not just a place; it's an experience, a sanctuary for those seeking a connection with nature in its purest state, and, of course, a global epicenter for water sports enthusiasts.

This jewel among Fuerteventura's beaches is much more than a simple stretch of coastline. It's a dynamic ecosystem where tides create ephemeral lagoons of crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming and learning windsurfing and kitesurfing. Its vastness allows us to always find a peaceful corner, even on the busiest days, inviting us to lose track of time as we walk along its dunes or simply gaze at the horizon. Here, the sun shines almost all year round, and the constant breeze gifts us an unparalleled feeling of freedom.

How to Get to Playa de Sotavento

Getting to Playa de Sotavento is relatively straightforward, although we highly recommend having your own vehicle to explore this vast area and its surroundings with complete freedom. From Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), the drive takes about an hour, following the FV-2 towards the south of the island. The beach stretches for several kilometers, and its most well-known access points are near Costa Calma and, especially, in the Risco del Paso and Malnombre areas.

If coming from Morro Jable, the journey is much shorter, just 15-20 minutes by car heading north on the FV-2. From Costa Calma, the beach is practically at your doorstep, and you can access it via several turn-offs from the main road, many of which are signposted towards windsurfing and kitesurfing centers. You'll always find ample, unpaved but well-maintained parking areas to leave your car with peace of mind. Public transport is limited in this extensive area, so a rental car becomes your best ally to fully enjoy the Pájara beach and its charms.

The Sand and Water

The first thing that captivates us when stepping onto Playa de Sotavento is its sand. It's fine, golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot, stretching as far as the eye can see. Walking barefoot on it is a delight, and its texture is perfect for relaxing or for children to play building sandcastles. The cleanliness of the sand is exceptional, contributing to the feeling of being in a pristine paradise.

The water, on the other hand, is of astonishing clarity, with hues ranging from bright turquoise in shallow areas to an intense blue offshore. But what truly distinguishes Sotavento are its famous tidal lagoons. At low tide, natural pools of shallow, calm water form, ideal for safe swimming for children and for beginners in windsurfing or kitesurfing. These lagoons constantly change with the tidal cycle, creating a dynamic and fascinating landscape that is never the same. The water temperature is pleasant year-round, allowing us to enjoy a refreshing swim in any season.

Services and Facilities

Despite its wild and natural appearance, Playa de Sotavento offers a range of services that make our visit more comfortable and safe. In the busier areas, especially near water sports centers like the famous René Egli center in Risco del Paso, we find a fairly complete range of services. There is ample, free parking, although unpaved, which is a blessing given the influx of visitors.

For our comfort, there are some showers to rinse off sand and salt after a day at the beach. The chiringuitos (beach bars) are key spots to recharge, offering everything from refreshing drinks and ice cream to light meals with spectacular sea views. They are perfect places to enjoy a good coffee or a cold beer while watching windsurfers glide across the water. Furthermore, during the high season and, especially, during the celebration of the World Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Championship, the range of services expands considerably.

Safety is a priority, so the beach has lifeguards who watch over the well-being of swimmers and athletes, especially in the busier areas and lagoons. It's also possible to rent umbrellas and sun loungers at some points, allowing us to enjoy the sun without worries. While it's not a beach with 'full accessibility' in the strict sense due to its expanse and natural terrain, the access points to the sports centers are usually better adapted for people with reduced mobility up to certain areas.

Best Time to Visit

Playa de Sotavento is a destination we can enjoy all year round, thanks to Fuerteventura's privileged climate, known as the 'island of eternal spring'. However, depending on our preferences, some times may be more suitable. If our main interest is water sports like windsurfing or kitesurfing, the summer months (June, July, August) are the best choice. This is when the trade winds blow with the greatest intensity and consistency, creating the perfect conditions that have made this beach world-famous. In fact, the World Championship is held annually in July or August, attracting athletes and spectators from all over the globe.
